Not really, speedtested just now at ~2900kbps, I get 4000kbps on a good day....

just done a test , slightly up if anything, gw5 btw

I've moved this to IDNet Help. :)

I've got no speed problems here on gw5. I'm getting the maximum possible throughput for my profile.

What are your stats looking like? Could you run a BT speed test to see if this is a profile issue?

Will do that now Sebby thanks.(just timed out ) will run one now

Okay, thanks. It's always best to try and rule this out first. :)

David

IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  4160 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 1176 kbps

Here you go Sebby,Im usually around 5.8 Down with 371 up !dont know how to get stats im afraid, hope this helps

Well you're sync'd at 4160k, so if you're saying you usually get throughput of around 5.8Mb, there's some extra noise around that is affecting your sync - a reboot might solve this if the noise has subsided since the last sync.

The profile is wrong (should be 3500k), which suggests there has probably been some instability of late, but this will catch up within a few days.

All that said, that doesn't get away from the fact that throughput is very low for the current profile. Given that we are both on gw5, I would be inclined to think this is an exchange issue, perhaps maintenance.

All good here on gw5.

I tried to do a speed test, but I get that dreaded java socket error. ::)

Just run a speed test at DSL Zone, it's showing 6603, so no problems here.

On dsl4. :)

Your throughput is a bit lower than I would expect for that profile, Brian. I'd have thought you should get 4600-4800.

Yep, same here. It could just be a case of tweaking MTU and RWIN.

BrianM

Thanks Rik/Sebby.  Could it be because i'm still using the Thompson 330 modem supplied by wanadoo?  I think maybe i need to update the driver for the Thompson to get a faster speed. I had such terrible download speeds with Orange, (350 on average) and then coming over to IDnet and getting 3800 on average, i'm well happy and reluctant to change anything as things are runnig so well.  I don't play games and not a heavy downloader and don't have any connection problems at all.  Have been thinking of getting a router but undecided.   The phone wire running down the outside wall is 30 odd years old and bell wire with bare connections at the top, so don't know if that would affect the performance of a router or not. Read plenty of useful advice about routers on Idnetters so maybe make the change one day.

It could well be the driver - it would certainly be updating to the latest.

A router is one of the best investment, in my opinion. Despite your old wiring, you're getting a very decent sync (only just over 1Mb off full sync). You could potentially improve it by removing the ring wire, fitting a filtered faceplate, etc, but you might just want to leave it alone. Plus, a router could well improve the sync.

Like I say, for now, I'd certainly consider updating the SpeedTouch drivers. :)

Rik/Sebby.  Just done as you suggested and updated driver for my Thomson 330 and done another speedtest with the following results.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  6784 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5073 kbps.

Everything seems to be running ok so far. A big improvement don't you think?  :D

:ithank: both.

Thank you  and a   :karmic: to you and Sebby for the advice, don't think i'll go down the router route just yet, maybe later.  :thumb:

It certainly looks like the drivers have helped. I'm glad. :)
