missing dvd rw drive

i have an external backup drive,and added a few programs to it this afternoon, running xp btw.
then i wanted to burn a disc , but the dvd rw drive would not work.
checked my computer dvd rw not there
checked bios ,yes its there
checked device manager, yes its there but with a red cross, clicking on it takes me to a page which says , this device is disabled click here to enable, but when i do it says windows cannot enable this device
when i connected the external drive it came up with its correct drive letter , so windows must know the drive is there, otherwise the letter would have changed

removed external drive, restarted computer (full shut down) but drive still as above

the draw opens and shuts as normal so i guess power is ok
anyone got any ideas, please ?

When I read it had a red cross, I thought it must be disabled, but then you said it can't be enabled...

What I'd suggest is right-clicking on it in Device Manager and choosing Uninstall, then unplug it and plug back in again. Hopefully Windows will reinstall it and it will work.

If DVD/CDs become 'lost', code 39 error "Windows cannot load the driver. The driver may be missing or corrupted (Code 39)".

Go to Device Manager, uninstall CD & DVD drivers. Uninstall Primary and Secondary IDE channels under IDE/ATAPI Controllers - ignore requests to re-boot machine.

Go to Regedit, navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Look for the key which refers to DVD/CD-ROM drives. Delete the subkey UpperFilters, also LowerFilters if it is present.

Re-boot the machine. All should now be well.

what i do,nt understand is WHY i lost it in the first place, or is that one of those "thats how life is with windows " things

I never found out why it happened, Bob, just that it did and all the normal tricks failed. One this I did note was that Nero was implicated in the registry changes.

rik ,can't be nero i do'nt use it , could'nt get on with it.

think we ought to invent a name for these mysteries of windows ,which appear to have no explanation , maybe gateisms, or winphuts , or just plain bl**dy mysterys

Did you ever install Nero on the machine though, Bob. I found it left traces which caused the problem, but it seems a larger issue - a Gatesism is probably a good term for it.

rik i did once have it ,but i have done several , formats and clean installs since then so i think its safe to say nero has gone .

but i think  NOREEN has just given the answer on another thread , its the one about acronis ti ver 11, which has some problems.

apparently if you do a restore using acronis v11 , it can stop you using windows systen restore. and mess up the "safely remove hardware icon/system " which results in the loss of drive/s

i had just done a system restore from acronis v11 ,and used "safely remove". and lost a drive

I'm becoming seriously concerned that Acronis have lost the plot, Steve. A piece of software like True Image needs to be 100% certain, something they seem to have lost sight of.

I understand that the v10 and Vista problem involving the use of a repair disc may be for those who don't make full image backups (it was discussed here some time ago). I always make full image backups so hopefully won't be affected but a kindly IDNetter made me a repair disc as I didn't have one, just in case of problems. I believe that this particular problem was actually dealt with in v11 but I'm still not changing.

I thought I'd offer it as a suggestion as there are a number of these systems out there and IMHO they're just asking to break stuff as Windows moved on.

Yep... I used to be 100% Sony but I won't have their stuff in the house now. Not since one of their senior execs promised to stamp out media copying by firewalling it at your PC and ISP... and so on.

I try to avoid Sony product professionally too. My cameras are all Cannon now and I've been buying Panasonic display panels at work. People at work also ask me which laptops they should buy and the answer always includes the words "whatever you do, don't buy Sony."

I must have boycotted tens of thousands of pounds of their stuff so far.
