I think it's sounding more and more like Windows is to blame here. How about a fresh install?

Dangerjunkie

Sorry to hear about your pain.

Try putting the card back in, going to the device manager then uninstalling it. Reboot and see if it works the second time.

Suggestion 2... Go to the card manufacturer's website (or the one for the company that made the chip on it if that doesn't work) then download the absolute latest driver and try installing that.

If that doesn't fix the problem, remove it again then look at the files on the driver disc (particularly the inf ones) and do a search for those files under \windows\ and you should find a copy in at least \windows\inf. Move those copies to a junk folder (just in case it goes horribly wrong and you need to put them back) Reboot then install the driver again from the download.

Please note the third operation is not entirely risk free and if you're not comfortable delving into the guts of Windows it may be worth getting someone to give you a hand.

Good luck,
Paul.

Cheers,
Paul.

I've tried all this, been at it since 5:30pm and to be honest. i'm sick of looking at the inners of a pc and get my fingers caught lol. why do they make it so hard to put new cards in  ???

Might aswell go wireless or backup and re format. I do have alot of cr*p on here that i no longer use!

Sebby

I'd say a format is your best option, but that's just me. :)

psp83

I've reformatted.

The old network card still didnt work but i've managed to get the new one working.

So hopefully i can get this pc back to where it was tomorrow minus the rubbish  ;D

psp83

One thing i have noticed since getting the pc working again.. pings are high one mo and low the next.

Is there any problems or do you think its something to do with the card?

No luck with the new card.

This is a mystery. I don't know that I have ever seen this before!   ???

Rik

Have you tried removing the card from Device Manager, Paul, then re-booting the machine and letting it re-discover?

The old card is knackered! doesn't even work in a 2nd pc.

The new card is now working, but last night i had a ping problem, up and down all the time (as above) i'll see how it goes and if it keeps happening then i know its the new card.

Rik

Well, at least you're half way to solving it, I guess. Can you dump the old card drivers?

Well windows wont let me uninstall or disable the old card and if its not in the machine i get error message pop up..

When i try to uninstall or disable, windows xp hangs and does nothing.

Rik

Remind me, Paul, is it part of the mobo?

no, its an ethernet card. but i do have one on the motherboard that doesn't work aswell that i would like to uninstall/disable but get same problem as the old card that has failed.

Rik

Fancy a fresh installation? :(

I reformatted last night and still get the same problems with both, onboard and old network card, still hangs if i try to uninstall or disable them.

Reformatting was the only way i could get the new card to work.

Rik

Weird, I can't think of anything to suggest, Paul. With a clean start, the system should be able to run without the existing cards. Have you double-checked the BIOS settings?

Bios is fine.

Something is wrong elsewhere i think.
Maybe the motherboard is on its way?

Rik

It's possible. I can't think of a reason why, on a fresh install, you should not be able to remove a card - at that point, the system doesn't know it's there.

I can only think it's a faulty motherboard now!

Dangerjunkie

I could see this kind of thing happening if the drivers for the card that are included on the Windows install media stink and the install was done with the card in. Default driver installed again and you're in the same mess.

I would try a reinstall with the card removed :)

What is the card make and model?

Cheers,
Paul.
