A new ( to me ) speed test that seems to give fair results can be found at;

http://myspeed.visualware.com/servers/lhr.html

It is designed for VOIP but is fine to use for general speed tests.

If you click on the resulting speed test page at the bottom text, you can copy and paste the results.

Limited number of uses per session, not sure how many or for how long. ;)

Very interesting... I'm a bit put off on speedtesters in general. They seem to be a mixed bag. About the only time I use one is when I think things are sluggish and I need to verify my impression or use it to rule out part of an equation.  My favourite for some time was Dan Elwell's test, http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/ but I don't think it has been updated in ages.  Pity.  The diagnostic reports were really useful in posting to forums or helpdesks to help diagnose problems. I'd love to see it picked up again.

Mine are consistent, give or take.

No serious deviation.

Thanks In', a usefull site ...... bookmarked!

While on the subject of Speed-tests, and thinking of the imminent  ::) arrival of ADSL2, I thought some of you may like to try this speedtester.

HERE

No responsibility taken for results.

Sebby

I got 3.77Mb on a 4Mb profile, so it seems quite good, but these third-party speed tests can be affected by routing, etc, so may not always paint a true picture.

My result this morning.................

Nope. The packet loss and erratic connection means that I can't go into Second Life for more than 2-3 minutes at a time, which is highly frustrating when trying to set up an in world business.

Baz

I know that different tests give different results and some are not to be relied on but has anyone come across this before. the tester here which you probably have tried, lets you save results if you register. I just tried a test and got a normal result for my line at the moment, then I did another after logging in so I could save it and the result was very poor, nearly half speed. tried it again out of curiosity and got a similar result, when logged in it is slower ??? ???

what else is it doing when logged in I wonder. Any ideas

Simon

That speed tester is always way off the mark for me, Baz, but have to admit, I haven't registered.

vitriol

what's the general concensus on the best speedtester, apart from the BT one which can be a pain to get working?

personally I find that the namesco one is pretty accurate.

Rik

I find Namesco a good indicator, but I don't take it's results as gospel. Thinkbroadband is another good one. The most accurate result, though, is to download a large file and time the process.

I find the one in the original post is nearest at matching BT's figures.

has any one when using the BT tester got through the test then had the option of continuing to another test. you have to change your settings to use it but it didnt work for me  ???

Simon

Haven't used it for ages, Baz.  If it ain't broke... ;)

Found this obviously elsewhere

"The BT Speed Tester provides an indication of the speed of an ADSL connection at three different stages of connectivity which are outlined below:

    * Stage 1 -> Home Network -> BT Network -> Zen Network -> The Internet
    * Stage 2 -> Home Network -> BT Network -> Zen Network
    * Stage 3 -> Home Network -> BT Network"

In order to progress through the stages, the tests from a previous stage must fail.

In other words ONLY if your performance is below the expected threshold for your service, will you be asked to complete further tests.

:hehe:

Baz

latest from my ISP is.....Openreach state they have cleared the fault last night after proving it to be with carrier provider (BT''s) kit..........

have they admitted to a fault :o :o   and I got this result earlier

Your DSL connection rate: 7200 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 6000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5548 kbps

so hopefully its on the mend.   only been like that since May........up and down.....well what do they think I expect, am I asking too much BT ;)

Sebby

Hopefully it's sorted, Baz. :fingers:

Baz

thats what I thought Sebby, we all know what BT are like

Baz

still cant get the BT tester to work. any one else having trouble?

Rik

I rarely try, Baz, I've never enjoyed watching paint dry. ;) I only use it if I need to check my profile.

Just used BT Speedtester, no problem, the whole process took 2 minutes, lucky or what?  :D
Brian

Take care of all your memories. For you cannot relive them.

Sebby

I just tried it and it worked first time (albeit as slowly as always).

Baz

damn......must be me.

Like the others, Baz, no problems here at all. Is your Java up to date?

Baz

well youve hit the nail so to speak Rik,  updated Java last week and it seems that its that that caused the fault. went into the Java console and deleted the applet for BT tester, closed IE, re-started and tried again and it worked.

Thanks for trying everyone.

ps..bad news is on getting the tester to work I got a bad throughput result from it      Why oh why did I have to say it was getting better :D :D

Rik

Never admit to improvements, Baz, it keeps the line on its toes. :)
