How Do I Remove.....????

Hi all.

Having thought I'd sorted out all my issues from migrating over to Idnet, I now find I'm faced with another issue.  I've spoken to someone at Idnet earlier today, but to be honest, I feel like I must come across as some antiquated, whining, clueless housewife whose finger hovers over any keyboard button in terror prior to pressing it.  That's true to a degree; all of the above apply but "whining" - which I only do to my husband. :)

Please bear with me - my forte isn't computers/internet and I am all too conscious that I sound like a real dunce - but here's no point in me trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about, because I just simply don't!  I really am backward when it comes to computers, and that's why I came to Idnet, so that I could speak in my mother tongue language (and vice versa) with people who weren't reading from a script and who knew their stuff :-[

Basically, I called my former ISP today to make sure they had closed my account.  They verbally said they had (as of today), but once the call was terminated, I found I could still log in to my account and emails.  Funnily enough though, when I try to log into my old ISP account (to test that the account was closed!), it now comes up with something about Pay As You Go account.  I then got back in touch with former ISP, who said that once broadband had ceased with them, or migrated, it automatically went over to their dial up service, if that's what I wanted.  Well, I don't want that!  I never had dial up with former ISP (Orange), and certainly don't want it now that I've had the misfortune to experience their broadband dis-service. 

The guy I spoke to at Orange suggested I remove all their software from my computer.  So, call terminated, and I immediately set about removing any Orange software.  However, upon clicking into "Add/Remove Software" in Control Panel, I found absolutely no trace of anything that I could detect as Orange software.  I must have checked about five times down the list, thinking I must be mistaken, and my eyes must be playing tricks.  But no, there really was no trace of an Orange program.  I was able to delete the icon on the desktop and the Speedtouch icon etc, but apart from that, can't see anything I could possibly delete relating to them.  I am aware that just by deleting stuff off the desktop, does not necessarily mean that the program has been deleted.

I connect to broadband via a D-Link ethernet ADSL2+ Modem, and have obviously configured this to Idnet.  I've clicked into "Internet Options" and there appears to be nothing listed under "Connections" indicating a dial up service - or anything under there, for that matter! 

I've also looked in "Network Connections" in Control Panel.  It states "LAN or High Speed Internet".  Underneath that, it has two icon thingies (hey, that's quite technical for me!).  One says "1394 Connection Connected, firewalled 1394 Net Adapter".  If I click on that, it brings up details of a box saying "1394 Connection Status".  Then it has tabs for "General" and "Support".  Underneath "General" tab, it states the following:-
Status: Connected
Duration: (well, at that time it was increasing in minutes, but was on about 4 mintues then).
Speed: 400.0 mbps

Under "Support" tab, it is blank.

It then gives me the option to delete this if I want.  Is this anything to do with Orange, my former ISP?  Should I delete it?  I'm conscious about deleting anything I shouldn't, because I have no idea what anything like this means!  Could this be something to do with this back up dial up service that Orange have now automatically put me on?

Under "Network Connections", there is another icon thing.  This states "Local Area Connection, connected, firewalled, SIS 900-based PCI Fast Ethernet".  This icon also has the "General" and "Support" tabs, but this time, appears to have all the Idnet details under "Support".

Now then, if you're still with me, does anyone know how it is possible for me to completely remove all traces of Orange broadband/internet/dial up from my computer, and if so, provide an idiot guide on how to do so?  Also, the man from Idnet said that because I have an ethernet modem, there shouldn't be any risk of Orange dial up interfering with connection, and he thinks it's probably the back up dial up for Orange.  Can I therefore rest assured that even if I can't remove the Orange stuff from my computer, and can still log in to my accounts with Orange, there is no way that I could have a dial up service with them whilst already having broadband with Idnet???

The thing is, I know how Orange operate, and know just how corrupt they are.  Because I have very little knowledge of computers and the internet, I am worried they can trick me into automatically dialling up something that I know nothing about until I receive my next BT bill! ::)

Anyway, if anybody can help in any way, I'd be very grateful.  You really helped me with my last query, so I'm hoping I can come back for more!  ;D

Hi Moonshine

The 1394 connection is actually a firewire socket and nothing to worry about. The SiS one is the network card that your modem is connected to, and that is also OK.

Assuming you are using XP, if you hit Start > Network connections, do you see anything else listed? Do you have an analogue modem on your machine, and if so, is it connected to the phone line. If the answers to all these are no, you have no problem.

Otherwise, get back to us, and we'll do a little digging with you.

If you're using IE, btw, and it's got Orange branding on it, that too can be removed easily. :)

Hi.

Yes, I am using XP.  The only other things I can see under "Network Connections" apart from the two things already mentioned are under the title "Wizard".  These are "New Connection Wizard" and "Network Setup Wizard".  Other than that, there is nothing else listed.

Oh my God, I'm so sorry, I don't know if I have an analogue modem on my machine!  I connect to broadband as specified by my ethernet modem.  Prior to that, I used to use a Speedtouch modem provided by Orange.  Prior to that, I was on Dial-up with Tesco.net.  How can I find out about an analogue modem on my machine?!!!!

Finally, yes, I'm using Internet Explorer.

Sorry.  I'll go stand in the corner with a pointed hat with a letter "D" on it... :'(

Hi Moonshine

Do you have a cable running from your computer to the analogue (phone) side of the ADSL filter. If not, you have nothing to worry about - and it sounds as if you don't, tbh.

Is your opy of IE 'Orange branded', ie does the title bar say something like Internet Explorer provided by Orange'.

I think what happens is they move you to a free account. Don't worry - there's nothing Orange on your computer. You could setup a dial-up account should you want. My advice would be to tell them you don't even want this free pay-as-you-go account. But, like I say, there's nothing to do at your end. :)

My husband has is checking.....he says the modem IS connected to a socket next to the phone side of the ADSL filter.  Am I doomed?

It's perhaps worth mentioning, Moonshine, that IDNet provide a dial-up backup service, in the event of your broadband having problems, so you might want to invest in a 56k modem at some point. If you have a laptop, most come with one.

The dial-up number is: 0845 602 1131 with your username and password being the same ones you use for broadband.

Not at all. It sounds like there is no dial-up account setup, plus it's something that would need to be initiated by you. :thumb:

No, that sounds like your D-Link modem, which will be plugged into the socket which is not marked with a telephone, and uses small RJ11 connectors, not standard BT ones.

My D-Link modem is connected into a D-Link ADSL micro filter into a socket marked "DSL", which is adjacent to a socket marked "Phone", which is connected to my phone.  Does this help?

They are obviously referring to their back-up dial-up service.  To use it you would have to set up a connection yourself Moonshine.

By deleting their Network connection settings, you have deleted 'their software'.

The only other thing might be the browser being labelled 'Orange' as Rik says.

Forget 'em (after stopping their Direct Debit at your bank, just to  be sure!!  :whistle:)

Yup. You're not connected with a dial-up modem, it would be impossible for your machine to dial Orange, you can relax.  :thumb:

If IE is flagged with Orange branding, then go to http://www.dougknox.com/utility/scripts_desc/unbrand.htm, download and run that script and you'll be totally rid of them.

Thanks so much everyone.  That is a relief.

Unbelievable how Orange have taken up so much of my time during my 9 months with them.  I could have undertaken an intensive computer course in the time I've spent trying to sort out my issues with them.......!

I am so glad I found Idnet. ;D
