Hey guys

Im wondering which addons do you deem as a necessity when using firefox. Mainly I'm after something to block those damn tracking cookies (first thing that comes to mind is the adblock addon but I doubt it will do this)

Anything else useful is worthy of a karma  :P

which subscriptions do you opt for in adblock?

Rik

You might want to look at CookieCuller, Sam. It allows you to mark cookies for keeping, eg login cookies, and remove the rest. FireFTP is another I like, as is FEBE for backing up the FF setup.

the ABP Tracking Filter does for me, but easylist/easyelement will do the job
fire ftp is a client only not a server. You would need to setup something like filezilla
if you want to serve information that hooks in through your browser have a look at plain old webserver https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/sunbird/addon/3002

I have all pop-ups blocked  :shake:

Baz

I have these add ons.......

AdblockPlus
British English Dictionary
Downloadhelper
Fasterfox
FireFTP
Foxytunes
Foxytunes Skin - Aqua Bubbles
Mouse Gestures
Tab Mix Plus

beauty of it is that you can just enable them as you want to use them, like I dont have Fireftp running all the time or Foxytunes.  Mouse Gestures is quite good. once you get used to it you wont go back.

One I dont have now but is quite good is PicLens

On the topic of Firefox add-ons, does anyone know of an add-on that allows files to be opened rather than saved first (like IE)?

It offers me the option, Sebby.

In IE, you can actually choose run or save. In FF, you have to save the file, then you can run it, but a lot of things I don't need to actually save a copy. Or is it this that yours does?

Sebby

I found what was I was looking for. OpenDownload adds a run command to the download prompt, meaning you don't have to save the file first.

However, it wasn't the most simple thing to install because it's for Firefox 2 or lower. Firstly, that meant I couldn't even download the xpi file, but you can get it from the developer's own website here. Then, I modified the install.rdf file to allow it to install on Firefox 3, but when I tried to install it, I was told it wouldn't install because the add-on does not provide secure updates, whatever that means. This seems to be a new "feature" introduced in Firefox 3, but thankfully there's a way around it.

Type about:config, then create a new boolean value called extensions.checkUpdateSecure and make it false. Now the add-on installs and it seems to work! :)

DownloadStatusBar addon gives some run functionality. Instead of the download window, it puts a download progress bar in the status bar. When it's done, double click the status bar display, and the new download runs. (right click for more options, such as opening the containing folder of the download etc).

Other addons I use:

Greasemonkey (I love it)
FasterFox
IETab
GooglebarLite
SmoothWheel
PDF Download

Have I lost my way?

Thanks, Dan, although it's not quite what I'm looking for. I actually want to be able to run the file without having to save it somewhere first. OpenDownload seems to work well. :)

D-Dan

Sebby,

Not to be pedantic, but that's impossible. Even the Run option in ie first saves the file to your local drive. It just happens to chuck it in your temp dir.

IMO, the FF way is more transparent.

You're absolutely right, Steve, except - like IE - this add-on automatically does that to a temporary directory, which it empties upon closing FF.

I just prefer having the run option for certain files that I don't want to save, open, then delete.

I have the option to run or save. Just don't ask me how. :)

Rik

The only thing I can think of is Options > Content > File Types > Manage.

I haven't got that on FF3, but I'm happy anyway. I know it's possible to get files with certain extensions to automatically open with an application, if that's what you mean...
