Bios is all in German

i have a medion 8383, and had a similar problem, with the video drivers, what i did was:-

put the windows xp disk in the rom (medion call it "operating system installation CD")

go to start then run, and type in sfc /scannow , note the space between sfc and the forward slash. then press enter, this will check that all windows files are present and in the correct place, it takes alittle while.

when its finished, go to start, settings, control panel, display, settings, and reset the resolution to what you want.

if you ask me why this worked "i haven't a clue " but it did !!!!

if after you press enter to start the scan, it says something like "windows xp professional is now required" or something to that effect, then we will need to move a folder (I386)from your disk to C: drive, before you can continue, so get back to me and i,ll write up the procedure

perhaps someone more knowledgeable can explain why this worked.

lona i've just looked allthrough my 8383 bios and theres no option to change lanquage.

this is a german computer ,made for the english market so you cold try this:-

start computer and hold down DEL ,bottom right of keyboard until bios comes up, then using up/down/left/right keys, move to the second line on the right hand panel, which in english is "load optimised defaults" it may default to english, you can,t loose anything by doing this.

the very best person to talk to is SANDRA over on pc-pals, she knows more about medion computers than medion !!!!
you may suggest to sandra the extra f11 bios code , password am8888egh, which may do something useful.

btw was the old card very dusty, its a problem on 8383's ,add dust to the fan and the small space on that model, and you have an overheating card , result dud card !!!!

Me either. I'd have put money on it that it was the motherboard. It just goes to show.

First thing I thought of was dust as I burned out a PSU once on another PC caused by dust so I'm quite particular at cleaning my PC and use canned air on it regularly.

All I can think of is my hubby started playing a game which used lots of graphics and it wasn't until after a while the pc started acting up.  At first it used to just freeze but then it eventually shut down altogether.  It was a friend who advised disabling the graphics card which was the only way I could get into windows.  Changing the card was a chance I took and it paid off.

I'm not installing that game for him again as he got addicted to it and used to play it for hours.
Mahjong was the game. Old one but addictive just the same.

I know Sandra very well and the reason she knows so much about Medion Pcs is she helped me when I first got mine 4 years ago.

Sandra knows everything about anything so she's your woman when things go wrong, in fact it was Sandra who first thought of the graphic card being faulty.

If it was dusty then the GPU core probably overheated.  That being said it would take alot of dust to make it overheat.  Most graphics cards have decent cooling solutions fitted to them now, can I ask did your old card have just a heatsink (passive cooling) on it or did it have a heatsink / fan (active cooling) on it?

It had a fan. Medion graphic cards had a bad habit of the fan falling off but mine was intact.  I still have the old card and might give it to somebody more knowledgable than myself to test it in another machine.  I really don't know how to test it to see what's wrong with it.
