Hi,
Help! 
My router lists my connection speed as 4768 kbps, yet when I do a speed test I can only get 2100.
Should they be the same or at least somewhere close?

You will get fluctuating speeds for the first 10 days as you go through the BT "Training" period.

I don't know anyone who has got the full speed their router stats show, i don't think its possible, i get over 7000kbps in my router stats but get between 4000kbps & 5500kbps depending on the time of day.

And if you run the BT Speedtest it will tell you what  maximum speed the exchange has got set for your line.  This is the limit for you , not what your router says.
And of course it's only the theoretical limit, so you can achieve at best slightly below this on a good day with the wind behind you (figuratively speaking).  As Maxping says, if you meet congestion on your exchange or elsewhere, you could be a lot slower.

Max will shove this limit up and down forever, reacting to the condition of your line as it sees it.
Down changes come very quickly (hours) while up changes take typically three days.

Not to mention sync speed is 'raw', and does not take account of the ATM overheads, so d/l speed can never be the same. Oh, and of course BT's profiling steps in 512kbps increments, so a change of 32kbps in sync speed can mean a significant change in throughput (in either direction).
