I see that Zen won the the Which best broadband provider, but I was surprised that iDNet weren't one of the runners up.  The Runners-up were Waitrose, and Utility Warehouse whoever the latter might be....

IDNet are probably so small that they're unknown to the likes of Which. I can't imagine Waitrose really are better.

Surely iDNet aren't that small, even though I doubt we'd ever know roughly how many customers they have.  I would have thought Zen would also be unknown outside the enthusiasts.  I'm not sure if Waitrose exist independently since John Lewis push GreenBee - I think both are PlusNet resellers.

Rik

Waitrose are definitely a re-seller. The truth is that if you ask the average BB user who IDNet are, they won't have a clue. If you ask the average Which? reader, they'll have even less of a clue.

In some of these "comparative" reviews the ISPs have to apply to be considered and perhaps IDNet didn't.

My cousin is a customer of UW, they offer these all-in-one packages, she says they used to be part of BT. I've no idea if that's correct though.

Sebby

Zen are considerably bigger than IDNet.

Simon

Indeed, but it's not always size that matters.  ;)

Thing is though, if IDNet suddenly became massively popular and loads of people joined, wouldn't the service degrade in quality?

If so, I hope they remain largely ignored by the general population.  I like to have quality internet.

I agree, although I think there's a difficult trade-off between being big enough to gain economies of scale and small enough to give a good service.

The problem is that BB is the sort of thing where big size forces the price down, you only have to look at the difference in price between O2's LLU offer and the one based on BT to see what I mean.

The trick is to be big enough to keep the price in the ballpark, but not so big that service suffers.  So far iDNet seem to be pulling it off very well.  Long may they continue.

Don't think many females will agree with you there.  ;) :D

I think that these are the UW people https://www.utilitywarehouse.co.uk/store/index.taf?exref=

A bit like CostCo the US company.  In my experience you do better by shopping around.

I think Zen deserves to be top of the list.  They are an excellent ISP and I would have stayed with them but kept exceeding my download.

Now that my son has left home I'm well below my max now but I'm quite happy to stay with idnet as it's a nuisance having to change isps.

If you're well below your allowance, Lona, you might want to consider switching to the Home Lite package, and saving a few bob.  You get 5Gb for £17.99, but if you go over it's £1 per Gb, so, anything up to 12Gb per month would still be cheaper, or equal to, the Home Max package, in cost, and don't forget, uploads don't count.  :)

When I say well below, Simon, I mean maybe 10gig below, 5gb wouldn't be enough for me.

Ah, well, best stay as you are then.  At least you have some headroom.

Zen is a good ISP, but I personally don't get too excited about these awards. Often they are only done on a small sampling of the entire industry and with a very set specific criteria.

Take it from Me Doc, Zen is an excellent ISP. :)
