In theory, that is the case, but I always do a custom install, then within a couple of days, the dreaded yellow shield appears on my taskbar...grrrrrr.

Do you have auto-updates turned on? Or notifications. I have both off.

If I turn them off, I get a red nag shield, if I switch them on, I get a yellow nag shield.

Gates has me beaten..  :'(

They are on at the moment tho'.

Rik

Settings > Control Panel > Security Centre > Change the way Security Centre alerts me (on left) > Uncheck Automatic updates.

That should stop the nags.

Eureka, it worked Rik, thanks, however MS has now replaced the yellow nag shield, with a red one suggesting that my AVG Ant Virus is switched off, it isn't, it is on, and fully functional.

Frigging Microsoft.. grrrrrrrrrr. ;D

If you have turned them all off that will happen IN, if you just turned off the auto update one and avg is not showing as running its a bug in the security centre that can happen sometimes, try this.

. Temporarily disable the WMI service (Windows management instrumentation) in: Start >Run > type: services.msc and in there find/stop WMI

2. Next delete the C:\windows\system32\wbem\repository folder, wait for it to recreate (can take a bit of time)

3. Restart the WMI service & restart the computer

Thanks Gary, no doubt they will try yet again to dump IE7 on to my computer...grrrrr.
IE7 since it is a major part of the OS even though I avoid it has been patched less times that IE6 In, even if you don't use it its worth having it in the long term as it effects much more than just browsing, if you do ever download it do a chkdsk after it leaves about 500 odd minor errors to be cleaned up ::) good ole MS because most people would know to check that hey ;)

I got 8, it appears microspft dropped the 12th update, "Microsoft surprised some by releasing one less update than expected. Last Thursday the software vendor had said that it was readying a fix for critical VBScript and JScript flaws in Windows 2000, XP, and Windows Server 2003. That update wasn't included in this week's patches, but Microsoft today wouldn't confirm that it had actually dropped the update because "this could put customers at risk," useful that, I guess it failed there Quality control and will appear next month maybe, I love the way it was not in the update but MS would not confirm it was dropped, Gates or Ballmer should run for president  >:D

Thanks Gary, the dreaded red shield has now gone, only to be replaced with the dreaded yellow one again.

I did get an IE6 fix amongst my MS Updates, so they are still supporting it, I just don't like IE7, it's a pity I cannot have both at the same time IE6 & IE7.

I rarely use IE, just on odd occasions.

I'd turn off the AV notification as well, In. In fact, I have all three boxes unchecked - I know what state my machine is in, so don't feel I need MS to tell me.

Same here, Rik my security lets me know if something is wrong and I trust that more than MS ;)

Noreen

I certainly don't get bothered by MS nags re IE7 on the update screen or the toolbar. I also have MS auto-updates turned off, in fact the only auto-updates of any sort that I allow are for NOD32.

Updating Ccleaner should not alter your settings In, anyway you can save them as a .INI file :)
