Rik

I'm still with v2 on three machines, v4 on the netbook. :)

How are you getting on with version 4 Rik , on wilders there seems to be so many bad reviews of ESS I wondered what the pure AV is like, also V3 has better detection ratings than version 2 though and I had no issue with V3 so I think that's probably the best version now. V3 ESS firewall was awful. It seems most software is rushed out theses days, I can see why people are happy to stick with what they have, maybe Eset should have stuck just to AV, rather than branching out into suites  :(
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Rik

No problems with the pure AV, Gary. The first version did hang a bit at the end of a file scan, but that seems to have been fixed.

I still prefer the look of v2, though, I think my age is showing. ;D

Slight Hijack!

How are you getting on with the NC10 Rik?  I think I'm going to take the plunge in two weeks when I get back to UK.

Rik

I love it, JB. If you're not looking to use it for long periods at a time, it's the perfect portable (though I do recommend the 2Gb memory upgrade). The screen is very clear, battery life is up to 7 hours, it does well with wireless and Bluetooth connections, and makes quite a good portable DVD player if you can copy them to the HD. Sound is relatively poor, but I wouldn't expect a lot from a box that size and tend to use headphones if I want quality.

My reference to long periods of time is simply the fact that the vertical resolution is 600, JB, so you tend to use the scroll wheel a lot (or the scroll strip on the touch pad). The screen is easy on the eye, though and the keyboard is only very slightly smaller than that on my notebook (7%), despite the package size (and weight) being considerably reduced. It's got a reasonably nippy HD too.

Some people complain about the touchpad, but I've never been able to use them so always have a mouse plugged in. It's got three USB ports, plus a 10/100 and a built-in card reader for SD & SDHC.

I really don't see the point of these internet security suites if you're behind a NAT router. I much preferred pure AV when I used Windows.

Simon

Back to ESET - if you guys are reluctant to perform upgrades, does that indicate that you don't actually have much confidence in the product?  If that's the case, why do you use it?

Rik

I think, in my case at least, it's a preference about the interface. I liked the v2 'get your hands dirty' interface, just as I preferred DOS to Windows when it came to tweaking machines. NOD4 does just as effective a job, it's just I can't get in there up to my elbows anymore.

Still running V2 here.  My elbows are clean, I don't bother NOD and NOD doesn't bother me. What more could one ask!
Now, if NOD would rewrite Windows !!!!

Noreen

I was frightened off v4 of NOD32 by all the problems posted on Wilders. Version 3 has had fewer problems and is generally accepted there as a solid version, certainly I've never had a problem with it.

drummer

I'm still on v2 of Nod32.

I know what you mean, Rik (although not specifically about NOD). Things get too pretty and not raw enough.

Same here for F-Secure, Rick.  Most of the time, I don't even know it's there.

I see that point, Rik, but as Noreen says, it does seem that later versions have had some problems, and it does make one wonder if the product is as good as it used to be.

Well, I'm running v4 on the Sammy, and it seems as efficient as v2, just nothing is where I want ti to be any more. :)

Been running V4 on all my machines without any problems, Rik, in fact I've just switched from using the Security Suite (ESS) version to using Nod 32 AV and Comodo as my firewall which seems to be a much better firewall than the one in ESS.

The Comodo does seem good for the price, Ray. :)

It does, Rik, I'm only using the free version of the firewall but the cost of the Pro suite seems reasonable, not sure how good the AV part is though.  :-\

changing to our normal topic though I've just put a pasty in the oven.
