Hi all,

My current setup is this...

Non NT5 master socket with nothing plugged into it, approx 5-7 meter flat hard wired extension, with "soap on a rope" filter.  Phone and speedtouch router plugged in to filter. I currently sync at 6,912.

after reading various threads, i have realised that this probably the best set up. :clever:

I will probably change master socket to a NT5 with filtered faceplate, but would it be best to run an ethernet lead round to the pc or get a usb wireless adapter.

Regards

Hi Alan

A flat extension cable is always bad news with ADSL, so your ideas are sound. You can't change the master socket yourself legally, but if it's an NTE5, you can change the faceplate.

I'm always in favour of wired connections over wireless, so if you're running one PC, I'd have a short ADSL cable at the master, with the router situated next to it, then run an ethernet cable to the PC. If you have multiple PCs, depending on layout, I's run a Cat5 cable with RJ11 connectors from master to router, then normal ethernet to the PCs. The alternative would be mainsplug networking.

Cheers rik

so theres not much difference between

short socket to router, long router to pc

or

long socket to router, short router to pc

(cable lengths that is)

or am i missing something?

Hi Alan you should know Im as dense as fog with this stuff but I have found that the set up Rik has outlined really proved to be good for me.I bought a cat 5 cable  10 meters and run it through and it doubled my speed over wireless.I have a shorter cable in the other room for my laptop.

I am not offering advice but just commenting on how effective this proved for me.sounds far fetched but really did give greater performance and speed. ;) clever lot on here you know  ;D

It depends, Alan, but as a rule of thumb short socket to router, long router to computer is always best.

You want the telephone line cable to be as short as possible. Then you can run a long bit of cat5 to your PC.
