Hi all,

I've just moved into a new flat, signed up with IDnet and went live on Wednesday (22/11). I'm on Home Max and have managed to download at around 225 Kb/s ( just about the 2MBps mark) for the last 3 days and even earlier on today.

Went on this evening and tried downloading and noticed that web pages were loading particularly slowly...... tried downloading a file and only got 16Kb/s - thought this was wrong so I tried the speed test on adslguide and got 100kbps down and 350kbps up...... definitely not right.

Can anyone chuck any pointers in????
thanks

Need more information. Have you checked your exchange status? If you tested during the evening, you're hitting peak times which is when exchange contention will kick in. Nothing IDNet can do about that - it's down to wunnerful BT.

Also can you post your router stats (sync rate, SNR margin, attenuation etc). It'll give some idea of what's going on on your line.

However, nothing wrong with IDNet's speeds tonight; just got this:
Download Speed: 6788 kbps (848.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 632 kbps (79 KB/sec transfer rate)

need more info - would be useful wouldn't it  :D

Done a bit of looking around (would you call 0050h as peak?)

Just got this from the test on http://217.35.209.142/ (I think BT)
===============================================
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    IP profile for your line is - 152 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 119 kbps

The 119 or 152 would be correct for my current download speeds with files.
================================================

I'm using a Belkin F5D7632-4A  adsl modem/router. Not using wireless at all, using old Cat 5E cable.

On the stats in the router I've got:

And according to samknows.com:
You are approximately 901 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

===============================

From BT

For Telephone Number 019238xxxxx on Exchange NORTHWOOD

Your exchange is ADSL enabled, and our initial test on your line indicates that your line should be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides a line rate up to 2Mbps.

Our test also indicates that your line should be able to support a potential ADSL Max broadband line rate of 6Mbps up to 8Mbps.

=========================

When I saw my downsream at 8128  I thought about 800 KB/sec downloads, but have never really managed about 240 KB/sec - admittedly not at obscure hours, but never even gone about it :-(

as an update

BT ADSL broadband availability
You are connected to the Northwood telephone exchange.

ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 6Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

Standard ADSL RAG results:
You can receive 2Mbps ADSL
You can receive 1Mbps ADSL
You can receive 512Kbps ADSL
You can receive 256Kbps ADSL

You are approximately 901 metres from the exchange (straight line distance).

Derval try this and let us know the results - http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/

derval

it's stating VP is red but on the last update (13th Nov) it says it was green

http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/?exchange=Northwood&exact=730&plugin=vp

just tried adslguide check again
Downstream 98.9 Kbps ( = 0.1 Mbps )
Upstream 375.7 Kbps ( = 0.4 Mbps )

:(

You said in the OP you went live on the 22/11 so in theory it could have changed to red anytime after that .
MY exchange has been red for a while and has only just gone green again, my speeds have returned to normal.
Don't take too much notice of the dates on that site it doesn't seem to get updated as often as we would like it to be .

derval

that is true.

I have just read the post by monkeysmith to say he had problems with his line http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,856.0.html but now that afer a few days he is going back up.

I've got a belkin router and I've read that these have problems disconnecting a lot and mine did for the first couple days, but since then its been fine..... coincidently a similar amount of time since my speeds have dropped....maybe related.

I'll leave it for a couple more days and see what happens.
