Email forwarding

Hi, just a quick question that somebody might be able to help me with.

In light of the recent mail problem I want to forward mail coming in to my main Idnet.com address to say, my hotmail address as a backup. If I set it to forward any mail "to" myaddress@idnet.com to hotmail would this

1) work with all mail coming in to myaddress@idnet.com

2) would a copy be left on the server for me to download at home on Thunderbird

Any advice gratefully received.

1) Yes, though it's worth forwarding on both the To field and the CC field.

2) No. Once forwarded, nothing is retained on the IDNet servers.

You could set up  'storage' idnet.com address, to which you also forward the mail, then use TBird to collect from there.

Exactly as I have done as the second forward

If you forward email from your idnet.com mail address then you won't be protected from idnet.com downtime like we've just experienced. If you forward from somewhere else to idnet.com then you'll be vulnerable to your original recipient going down. Perhaps I'm being a bit slow here, but I can't see any way of making sure you always receive emails straight away. The best you can do is pick the most reliable service to be the initial recipient.

A number of people lost data, Colin, due to accessing their mail solely by webmail or IMAP. This is more an exercise in data protection than access. I agree with you, if a server goes down, there's nothing to be done but wait.
