Migrating to IDNet

I'm currently with plusnet (i know i know, its awful) and really really want to get out and migrate to here

, failing misrebly with plusnets customer support i thought i would try asking a few questions here...i need the MAC code right? i'm guessing plusnet arn't going to pay that until i provide them with all outstanding payments? (they charged me double activation, which atm i'm not realling willing to pay) which means i can't migrate?

The current problem i have is the normal throttled ports etc but on top of that my connection seems to die (but not get disconnected from router) i think this is due to something like trying to access a closed port or something (shrug) and am hoping moving ISP will solve it...although its really plusnets appauling support that i'm fed up with.

Hopefully ill be able to get it all sorted soon and get across here

One day of trying to P2P with their latest ellacoya settings was enough to make me ask for my MAC. They had the nerve to offer me a free month then - but what use is a free month of a carp service - I ask you?

I'd ask for your MAC anyway and they might offer you a free month which you can put towards what you owe.

At any rate, the sooner you ask the sooner you get out, and they'll at least give you a figure you owe them.

Also, beware of just not paying, as from what I read on the forums there, they are very good at sending the heavies in to collect what they think they are owed.

Thanks for the advice Nerval, problem is i live in a shared house and i don't really want to pay off a 100 quid bill myself

Yes, I can see that's a bit grim. At least I'd been with Carpnet for a couple of years before I left so owed nothing.

A while back when there were loads of unhappy customers due to Carpnet bringing in secret caps, they had an amnesty on payments and let a lot of people leave without paying what they owed. They may do this again, though not sure how the BT takeover will affect it.

You do have right on your side probably in that I assume they brought in the worst throttling after you joined, but they know they are bigger than you and won't take any notice of threats about court action, trading standards and the like. All they seem to care about now is the bottom line, and customers can go hang themselves.

So there's no easy way out for you, I'd guess. And it's not as though you were asking for trouble by signing up for free broadband for life either.

Sorry I can't be more encouraging.

yeah i know i was asking for trouble i didn't even look round at the time, first time i had signed up to a ISP for myself in the past other housemates had done it. Now i'm in control and sick of this cr*p at plusnet.

Still unsure to go for HomeMax or HomeSuperMax...i don't download so much atm but i'm guessing the upload speed would help me a fair bit...then again £10 more a month

p.s How come HomeMax2000 and HomeMax are the same price, when HomeMax is a better product?

Some people can't get a stable line on the Max product, so have to stick with a fixed 2Mb (or 1Mb, or 512k) line instead.

Even on Max with a carp line, you could get only 1Mb, so it's not necessarily giving you more.

I'd go for the cheaper one, keep an eye on what you're using, and you can upgrade at any time with no problem.

Dunno if 1mb will be fast enough for 4 people though, i play alot of BF2142/WoW and housemates use alot of MSN videos/streaming youtube etc (sometimes all at once)

No I must have explained badly.
You go for the Max up to 8Mb product first.

Then, if that goes well and is fast, that's fine.

However, if your line won't settle and drops out all the time so that you're better off with a slower fixed line, then you go to the other package.

If you're OK on max now, you'll be OK on Max with IDNet.

i'm pretty sure its plusnet causing problems atm but if its hardware i can always buy new, either way gotta get out of plusnet

PN doesn't like customers like you. They just want people who look at emails and aren't bothered if the pages don't load first time. Once you dump PN you'll enjoy the net again, that's for sure. Time for a house meeting!

That's my argument, but the problem lays with the fact that Gaelic is an 'oral tradition' language, which doesn't use the unaccented Roman alphabet. A certain degree of anglicisation takes place, therefore, and the 'h' is generally used in conventional print. That said, I can produce arguments and examples for both options.
