braodband link fine, all phones in house (2) dead!

Any ideas urgently needed pls folks.

NB: Phone plugged into master socket also dead but BT says the line is ringing.

Simon

Got to be a BT fault, hasn't it?  I had the same when I moved house - no phones working, but BT insisted that the line was ringing.

Right on Simon.  Just been informed that Helston builders are repairing the roadside ouside the exchange and have managed to mangle a complete 'pipe' full so prob solved. Can't understand why I've still got BB tho.

I have had one of these faults too but with mangled cables like you have heard about I too find it a mystery how you broadband still works!

My broadband was fine but the telephone was dead everywhere but on the inner test socket where I could detect a very faint signal.

The on line BT line test diagnosed a fault between the exchange and my house but external to my premises.

Days later a BT "engineer" call shortly before my wife arrived home and left a card saying the fault was not external so he needed access inside the house. A little while later he returned saying that he had been back to the exchange but came in and tried his test piece and said the line was working. He then plugged in my previous (last) answer-machine telephone, lifted the receiver and got no dialling tone. Blamed our phone, told my wife we needed a new one and departed saying that despite this he would not report it as a fault in the premises.

When I arrived home I was enraged because the very simple telephone I keep to test with, the one he unplugged to plug his test phone in was the one that the line would not work with. I had already used it to eliminated the answer-phone and any of my other phone before risking reporting the fault to BT. The answer-phone was fine it had been standing unused for ten or more days till BT deigned to make their presence available. A couple of dabs on the call button under the receiver and there was the dialling tone as it was with my test phone.

This is the way BT alienate themselves and they don't even know they are doing it half the time.
There was not a charge and a good job too. I would have fought it tooth and nail. That guy knew he had done something in the exchange and just wanted to "lord it" over my wife!

Regards,

Les.

When I moved house, in Sept 2005, I took my old phone number with me, but when I tested the phone on moving day, which was when it was supposed to have been activated, it was dead.  I called BT, and they swore that the line was active and working, and it took me 3 days of phone calls to Calcutta, or somewhere, to get them to come out and investigate the fault.  The engineer arrived two days later,  fiddled about in the green box outside, and miraculously, my phones started working.  I don't think my broadband was working, as I remember emailing people from my mobile.  After the fiasco, I asked BT if they were prepared to offer a contribution towards my mobile phone bill, given that I had been without a landline for five days, and they graciously offered me £1.  Yes, one pound.  Needless to say, I no longer use BT, and am with Adept Telecom for my calls and line rental.

1035pm and still no talking bone despite earlier entreaties to bt to reconnect me as a priority as the wife is seriously ill (permanently I'm afraid). Still, this is UK (2008) and I don't really expect anything positive to happen for a few days yet. Damn BT and thank God for my mobile which has at long last been pressed into action.

Simon

Sorry to hear about your wife, Rick.  That must be tough.   :(

It seems anything with 'British' in the title is next to hopeless these days, and BT are no exception.   >:(

IIRC, we've seen someone before that had a line fault, but the ADSL still worked. It's to do with the frequencies ADSL uses; it can often work with the slightest link.

Sorry to hear about your wife, Rick. You are describing classic symptoms of a line break where one conductor has failed. The voice circuit then stops working but ADSL can 'jump' a small gap - because it's effectively a radio signal - and continues to work, albeit at a lower speed.

Hopefully things will get sorted soon, but you could go to the top and email the CEO if you want to push.

Thanks Simon & Rik for your kind thoughts on my wife Romy.  She has copd and coupled with frequent infections her life is not good. I'm a full time carer (unpaid of course since the government stopped my £45 per week carers allowance when I reached state pension age). OAP pension is a benefit since the Blair years of course but I won't go down this road else I overload the idnetters servers with vitriolic comment.

BT engineer called at the house today (8am ... yes, there is such a time), stated that our 'phone was 'flagged' if it went down and proceeded to give us a new line etc etc which took around 45 mins so everything in the garden is lovely.  So, WELL DONE BT, and the engineer would not even accept a cup of tea due to a huge workload. Mind boggling at times innit !!!

Router is retraining nicely, over 3000 now which is well on the way to my usual 7000. Sun is shining at last, dare I switch the TV on to watch the England/SA cricket ... won't push it yet!!

Thanks to all

R

Glad to hear they've sorted you, Rick. It will take up to 5 days for the profile to recover, but you should then be back to normal.  :thumb:
