Rik

Outgoing is fine, I'm timing out on POP though. Apparently, IDNet are working on the DNS and all should be well in 20 minutes or so.

Trevor has finished recovering files, so we may learn just what went wrong later.

phew that's good news, now to hold the big white light to Trevor and get him to answer a few questions >:D

I notice that POP and IMAP are being moved to a new physical server today.  Given they'd only recently been moved, why move them again?  Was the 'old' new server simply a stopgap until the delivery of a brand new machine with all the bells and whistles, hot-swap disks and so on?

Rik

The short answer is yes, Tac. Clunker is a bit long in the tooth, and was used because he could be got running quickly. I gather the new box has a lot more power/storage.

My webmail was fine until 15 minutes ago but is still not working. POP3 is ok. Maybe they are acting on Trevor's findings by restoring "lost" messages on a batch basis. Has anyone found any lost emails back in their webmail boxes?

Arathorn

Rik

Not me, but I don't use webmail unless I absolutely have to. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get a definitive answer as to what exactly is happening, it depends who I speak to.  :(

That's good to know Rik.  It does show they are prepared to put the investment in, (I assume), good quality kit that's up to the job.  I know rack mount servers built from high quality components, don't come cheap - they're not the sort of thing you get as a PC World 'special'.

merlin

so if the old one was called trevor, whats the name of this new one , do'nt tell me you just call it ,IT !!!!

Simon

We're not privvy to that information yet, Bob, but I'm sure we'll all e invited to the christening.  Maybe we could have a poll to decide on a name?  :out:

mrapoc

A poll would be great  ;D

I fancy the name ... Hubert Cumberdale

But yeh, will be interesting to question Trevor as to what went wrong. What will Trevor be assigned as after the new arrival? A backup perhaps?

Simon

A backup, or maybe to host the webspace, blogs, galleries, etc.  We don't know yet, but I'm sure IDNet will let us know in due course.

Baz

its a bit worrying that people name their computers  ;D ;D ;D ;D

is it an individual thing or should I be thinking of naming mine :D

Rik

You've got to call them something, Baz - especially in mixed company. :)

On a side note, it's good to see the continuously updated banner notice keeping everybody informed of what's going on.  A big (and welcome) change to what happened when Trevor went AWOL.

Kudos to Simon, the team, and Rik and co for setting it up.

psp83

Our work servers are called Brian and Judith and the back up is called Ivan.

So them names are taken ;D

Rik

I think it should be Rowland. :)

couldn't it be female and we could called it Belinda LOL

If we go female, it would have to be Norah as it's driving me batty! :)

What happened to Delilah?  Perhaps, as we have Trevor, the new one should be Eve?  ;D
