Which one !

  thinking of a upgrade to my system here ,a Intel quad or Amd quad don't know which one to go for so any feedback would be appreciated.

Are you building a new PC from scratch, or do you have a current PC you wish to upgrade. If upgrading what are its current specs? What do you use the PC for, as a dual core CPU maybe a better option?

its only the base unit which I'm upgrading as i upgraded the monitor  a couple of months ago with a HP w2007v .after having a quick read of a computer magazine i think a dual core would be a more suitable option for me as well as my pocket, now the question goes back to Amd or Intel again!

With the price of some quad cores not far off the dual cores if you want future proofing quad would be good if you can fit one in your board, saying that a E8400/E8500 dual core is fast and great value, I have seen E8500 for as little as £129.83, and the reviews for them are outstanding, as Glenn says though its dependant on what you want to use it for, avoid AMD, the Intel dual cores out perform the AMD quads, which says a lot. Personally I would still us an Intel processor, but it depends of your finances, something like this would make a good base for a system;

Depending on the current PSU you may need to replace that too, if so I would use a quality PSU not a cheap generic model.

I would agree with Gary in that for dual core the E8xxx series from Intel seems to over the most 'bang per buck'!

I've always been an AMD man, but I have to say, I think Intel are better at the moment.

AMD seem to have lost their way and still haven't come up with a decent processor to rival the core 2s or the quads. Even their newest phenom cores seem to be poor compared to the intel offerings.

I'm running an X2 in my mATX machine just because it runs so cool - currently 14 degrees Celsius, overclocked a little, with a heatsink only (no fan). But certainly in terms of performance, Intel are way ahead.

Intel Q6600 (quad) or an e6400/e6500 (dual) are both good and pretty much the same price. Quad will last longer but duals are most supported now (either way id go for quad). Although AMD's new socket may be their comeback here.

The intel Q6600 is great value for money at about £110.  If you get the low power go version (SLACR) then they overclock very easily, usually to at least 3Ghz from their standard 2.4 Ghz.

Both myself and my other half have them, mine is overclocked to 3.4Ghz hers to 3Ghz. So we're both pretty much getting better performance than the £600 QX6800 extreme (which runs at 2.9Ghz)!

Not to be sniffed at!

   had another email this morning to say delivery of the new desktop is Friday and not today as promised,never mind  got it for a decent price ( last week ) seems to have gone up by £50 this week !  so going to busy Friday with a stress test at 1.30  ,opticions at 3.30  and installing the new desktop etc in the evening .
