I have avg 8.01 on my vista pc but it gives problems on my xp pc.

Everytime I boot up it wants to update itself. It's very annoying as it downloads the same updates over and over again.

I have installed avast on xp pc and it seems to be working well and not using up the same amount of resources.

My free AVG says it's 8.0.138 and I haven't noticed any problem with my XP laptop.

They keep changing the close date for support on AVG 7.5, it has changed twice, I prefer 7.5, it's kind of like XP compared with Vista ( AVG 8 ).

I'm pretty sure I won't be upgrading to V8, and will find an alternative instead. 7.5 works handsomely, but V8 on PC2 is just too much software for my liking.

So unless AVG re-hash it a bit - I may be waving bye bye.

I'm happy with Eset Smart Security for now light and fast, I am a few bugs that cause blue screens on some pc's so I may try it again later, for now this works with ad muncher (i hate ads) and superantispyware as a on demand

I'm very tempted to try KIS 2009, but it's so tedious uninstalling and reinstalling security suites, I'll need to be in the right frame of mind, and have time to fiddle with it, so possibly during August.

The update caused havoc with my XP pc after 2 years of good service with the old version, so I dumped it in favour of Avast, which up to now

seem to be OK.

Dont try it yet Simon it causes BSOD on some xp sp3 boxes and Vista ones, the forum is littered with people complaining, they should be releasing a critical fix build in the next few weeks to sort these issues hence im staying with eset till they get it together

It is when it works sebby, the suite causes hell and BSOD as you may have seen on the forum, its no fun having a BSOD when you boot or shutdoown, Rinat Salihov one of the developers suggests using a beta server till they release new IDS updates, trouble is the beta servers are not updated with definitions very often (like weekends), the recent hotfix c is supposed to help some major cpu usage issues as well, so waiting for the critical fix build is a safer (they are on beta build 434 now, discussion about the builds can be found here here so to anyone wanting to try it out I would wait for a few weeks

I miss my Kaspersky, 2009 is a great av and the suite is fantastic, just very new and buggy.

I always do a install with things like anti dialer, parental control and banner blocking not installed, as I dont use them, and prefer ad muncher for ad blocking anyway, its great you can chose what you do and do not want to install, real flexibility

I think its more to do with the suite and its Hips system Sebby, also some people hit 100% CPU usage using just the AV but they tend to have massive archives, as I said I'll be back once the crtitical fix build is up and running but ESET is giving me stability with not much of a drop in detection, browsing is a lot faster though. I just wish they had not hurried Kaspersky 2009 out the door so fast considering the huge difference from version 7 it was bound to have a few issues but a BSOD when browsing was not fun

they will fix it soon enough though.

It's worrying, Gary, because I know it's a good suite, but they do seem to keep having these sorts of problems.

As Simon says when its running well its probably the single most powerful suite out there in my opinion aqnd many others including some big name review sites, looks like the network bases are being updated this week Simon on Wednesday so that should take care of most of the bugs, I have reinstalled and and am using the beta network bases untill then, the reason for all the bugs some people get is that this version is as far removed from version 7 as can be, its a completely new suite, with everything changed so its bound to have teething issues, with updates every hour on the hour, spyware capabilities as good as spysweeper if not better and stunning disinfection, it is very powerful and the new firewall with HIPS in the suite and vulnerabilty scanning based on secunia's database its not to be ignored, also a virtual keyboad to input your online banking etc is just great for ultimate privacy and all running lighter than version 7 Simon, infact it flies along really well
