Yep AVG version 8 is totally bug and bloat free, In   unless you stick to the outdated 7.5, shame when that happens

Thats all that matters then, In, and if its not broken..... but do you know its really doing the job, you may have malware it does not detect

To be fair, the same could be said about any solitary security app, Gary.  I guess you have to put your trust in the one you use.

Have to say I agree but disagree, it is rubbish, but for people with zero computer skills its great, the 2008 version had great detection, beating eset a couple of times, cleans all the malware it encounters, including your OS and offers decent protection for those who don't know, or don't care about getting to know there pc, its kept my mother safe for 3 years, that's a miracle, as she never updates any programs, so yes we loath it but it has its place....just not on our computers

Am I all alone with my PREVX2.0 and PREVX CSI scanner? 

I have just had to buy a PREVX2.0 license on the no.2 machine that I have been running the free Beta version on as PREVX have wound up the Beta program it would appear. £11.87 for a single user for a year so I was pleasantly surprised as when I renewed the one for no. 1 machine early on this year it was just over £14.

I run Windows Defender as well on no.1 machine simply because I had it as a Download when the Genuine Windows "Advantage" thing was foisted upon us but I don't know what it does that PREVX doesn't.

I used to cross check PREVX when I first started running it by running the Symantec on-line Virus Scan on a regular basis but when I got used to always coming up clean I weaned myself off bothering with it.

Another one I used to run fairly regularly was Ad-aware but most of what it complained about was trivial stuff that went if you cleared out the Temporary Internet folders so my use of that one has petered out too.

For me PREVX2.0 just seems to get on with the job in a totally unobtrusive way. 


Now my 91 year old Uncle, who has just completed his first month on broadband, having moved up from dial-up back in June, has the free AVG 7.5 installed on his Laptop so having read about the foibles 8.01, I am looking for something else that is free to install for him and hear AVAST mentioned. So are there any recommendations for this one?

I use other applications alongside AVG Gary, SuperAntiSpyWare, Spybot S&D, Comodo Firewall, SpywareBlaster as well as MS Defender, never had a virus/trojan yet.

And no Anti Virus Programme is 100% effective.

I just use kaspersky internet security and superantispyware and Windows defender Defender both as on demand, i disabled Windows defenders realtime protection and just use it once in a blue moon to scan as it came with vista, thats it and it works well, as you sat no av is ever 100% I liked Eset smart security but its malware capabilities are not as good as Kasperskies, and its firewall can be stoped to easily, plus way to many pop ups asking permission, Kaspersky recognises all your programs and sets rules in both firewall and HIPS its pretty much set and forget. Things change and I have a nice image with no av on it to revert to for playing with new products, but I like Kaspersky for now.

I read somewhere that Kaspersky have had their web site hacked, perhaps they need to get AVG installed to stop this kind of thing happening...

It was their Malaysian website and it was under construction but in my view with security there is never such a thing as a free lunch. AVG do well though with the paid for product not sure if the comparatives are for both paid and free though, take a look at AV comparatives to see how your av does, its the best site for separating the good from the bad really even the dreaded Norton is doing well these days.
