New Mail Server??

Just seen this on the iDNet forum on TB:

As I said I thought I may be missing something, but I would have expected to see it under Service Announcements....  Beats a hasty retreat  ;)

Has the new mail server broken already? Or am I just the only one blessed with no mail service?

Status page says all is well but:
  The server responded with an error. , Server: 'pop3.idnet.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Cannot connect to POP server 212.69.36.210 (212.69.36.210:110), connect error 10061', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

on all my Idnet.com mailboxes.

I'm not using SSL, the box is unticked.

My mail was working ok until today, I am at a loss to know whats happening.

I have altered nothing this end.

The ip address of the new mail server is 212.69.36.215, it looks like your computer is cacheing the dns entry for pop.idnet.com. If you use securemail.idnet.com instead or flush your dns cache you should be able to access email on the new server.

Whoosh...mostly that went over my head ;) but thanks. I restarted OE and it went straight in and attempted to get 245 msg's of which 179 were lost?

Message number 179 could not be retrieved. Account:*******, Server: 'pop3.idnet.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Message not found.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD

So apart from the missing 179 its now working, many thanks Martin.

What Martin was saying is that the last time you checked your email, your computer remembered the ip address of where to find it, to save time from not having to find it again. However, because the new server has a different ip address and your computer was still looking for the old one, it gave that error message.

Thanks for the explination, any ideas why I had 179 errors as per the quote I gave. They were numbered 1-179
Thats a lot of mail to go missing.

I'm not sure to be honest. Do you have your email set to leave a copy of the message on the server? I'm sure no email was lost, but wonder if outlook express is getting confused!

I expect your right Lance, I would normally expect around 50-60 emails a day and I got around 45 delivered so the other 179 missing mails may have been an OE error, hope so!

I dont leave a copy on the server, until recently I didnt see a need...

It's not generally a good idea, Mike, at least in the long term. Back up your mail locally, though.

There is this excellent free programme available here for making a backup of your email on your own machine.
