So tomorrow my Netgear DG834G will arrive and I will attempt to set up a wireless connection on my computer  :eek4: I didn't buy the router from idnet in the end, got it cheaper elsewhere.
I think I know how to set it up. Basically power up the modem and have it connected to my comp with the ethenet cable. Go to the routers admin page (http://192.168.0.1/ I think) enter my idnet username and password  and save. Now do I have to do anything on my mac? I should now have a connetion and can I  unplug the ethernet cable?  I got this e-mail from support, but not sure what it means

QuoteOnce you can connect contact us and we will log in remotely and enable encryption, making it secure for you. The encryption pass key is then entered in to the settings of the wireless adapter on the Mac Mini and Notebook.

I thought you set a password on the router so no one else can access my wireless? Sorry to keep going on about this - I am a worrier and want all of this to go smootly  :thumb:

Not been a Mac user since OS 8.6 but at the weekend I wirelessly enabled a friend's notebook.

I'd previously installed a wireless PCI card on her Windows desktop, so I used the encryption details from the router when I clicked on the wireless icon on the Mac.  Fairly certain I didn't use the Airport icon but as she's on her hols, I can't check.

Anyway, it took about three minutes to set up an encrypted wireless connection on the Mac using the same encryption details.

I was pretty chuffed, but she was miffed that 4oD on a Mac isn't possible.  :shake:

Win some, lose some.

What support are offering to do is connect to your router over the telephone line and set up your wireless for you, including the security. What this would then leave you to do is to 'find' your wireless network from your pc and mac, enter the wireless password (set by support) and hit connect! Obviously, if you are confident in setting the wireless up yourself, go for it and if all goes well then you will have no need to contact support.

You'll be fine. Support will always be there, as will we. :)

Meant to say also that I'd already enabled SSID on the router.  The Mac then detected the wireless connection in about two seconds and I used the subsequent connection prompts to enter the encryption details.

It was surprisingly simple.

Thankfully, setting up wireless networks tends to be these days!

It's going to have to be easy if I set it up lol

Lance

I'm sure you'll be fine - and if not we are always here!!!  8)

not pissmaina (sorry pixmaina) I bought it off amazon.. hope i haven't got that wrong too. Said it has been dispatched with delivery due today

Rik

Amazon are usually OK with next day deliveries, though I have known them miss - in which case they refund the charge.

As long as it is Amazon, and not a " Marketplace Seller "...you should be OK.

Yep, that's always the danger. It's so easy to buy from a marketplace seller rather than Amazon without noticing. I wish they'd do something about that!

:iagree: Worst thing Amazon ever did.

I rarely use them now, I just cannot be bothered any more. >:(

I find Amazon's service good, but their site leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes it's so difficult to see who you're actually buying from!

Agreed Seb, if they could just give the opt out from Marketplace sellers, then I would return to them.
