As I knew there was "something" wrong with my computer I thought that I'd do a really old system restore (April) in the hope that it might rectify the problem, the system restore process said that very old restores weren't necessarily reliable and suggested that I try a later one but I thought that I'd try it anyway. It turned out that it didn't restore properly and some of my programs didn't work. So opted to undo the restore and that didn't restore properly either, so I tried another recent restore point but that didn't restore properly either (my programs inc NOD32 weren't working properly).

So I decided that the only thing to do was an Acronis TI full image restore (9 July) and I've never done it before. :eek4: After a nerve wracking afternoon I've now got a restored computer although I've lost my latest emails. Everything is now working and a maintenance report says everything is working fine, although I know that in fact it isn't as I still have the original problem which at the moment is no trouble. The problem is the "Turn Windows Items On or Off" box is blank, apparently this is quite a common problem in Vista and nobody appears to know how to rectify it. At the moment I can live with it. :fingers: At least I've learned how to do a TI restore. ;D

Rik

Bad luck, Noreen, that's just the sort of wasted day I hate (and it plays havoc with my finger nails and hair ;)). :(

I feel absolutely shattered, Rik. However I'm very glad that I've learned how to do a TI restore, I won't be so scared next time. ;D

A google search about the Windows blank box problem results in loads of people with the same problem.

Lance

Always good to know that the ti backups work when needed!

There is that moment of silent prayer when you hit restore and you know there's no going back now. I just sit and sweat till I can re-boot, by which time I'm usually offering sacrifices. ;)

Sorry to hear that you had a bad computer day - I know how frustrating it is! Hopefully everything is back to normal now. :)

Noreen

All appears to be working OK except for a few minor problems that don't appear to affect the general running of the computer and I'm going to leave it like that for now. ;D Just got to update a few programs that I'd updated before I restored. That God for Acronis TI 10.

Rik

Come back to XP, Noreen, all is forgiven. ;D :out:

The laptop was made to run with Vista, Rik, and I'm just not going to mess around with it especially as it's under a two year guarantee. ;D

Rik

I can understand that, Noreen. It's just that I know more, much more, about fixing problems with XP. :)

The trouble is that there still appear to be a few random teething problems with Vista that nobody knows how to rectify or for that matter what causes them on some computers and not others.

Rik

I know, Noreen, It's frustrating, especially as it's been out so long. :(

That's one of the reasons I moved back to XP. It just doesn't seem mature enough yet.

I have had a pretty much trouble free experience with Vista Noreen, what problems do you mean

I have to disagree here Sebby, if you have the right specs it runs fine, I would not say its immature, no more than XP was at service pack 1, now I was a die hard stay with XP fan and Vista runs smoothly for me, all my software and hardware runs well, and I love the new updated search 4 I like the look of it, I like the extra security it does have, hell even the voice recognition is fun, it boots as fast as XP it transfers files as fast but with better organisation, it has a better network stack and a stronger kernel it does not run in Admin mode all the time thus leaving you open to malware running rife through your system so easily so you can actually install software without having to change from a limited to a admin account which was a pain in XP to say the least hence most people left it on addmin, UAC you get used to in a few days , now I don't notice it, I would not go back to XP if I was paid and I would say I did not expect that, now I know why it didn't work for you, be it hardware or lack or ram or maybe your drives lacked things like NCQ which do help, I don't know why it didn't but it does work here and also for a lot of other people, so if we could all remember back to some of the bugs and the awful security record of XP pre SP2, maybe we can put at least some things in perspective here.
Damned, if you do damned if you don't

Sebby

I've got the right specs, Gary - Athlon X2 5000+, 2GB RAM, SATAII hard drives in RAID0 - but it runs painfully slow, and that's my experience on almost every other computer I've seen.

I like what they've done with Vista - don't get me wrong - but I hate the performance. XP wasn't great pre-SP2, I agree with you there, but I believe it's the perfect OS now. Perhaps we should agree to disagree. :)

I just plain don't like Vista, it is just overkill in my view, too much useless cr*p included.

I far prefer XP, but to each his / her own as I always say. ;)

Good job we are all different innit...  ;D

I dislike an OS that makes it difficult for me to do what I want, which wants to nanny me instead of letting me get on with what I am doing. It's that which has put me off Vista (plus I don't want, or see a need for, Aero etc).

Thankfully I don't have Aero on Basic, or that would no doubt use even more resources.

As said previously I like Vista and it runs well and fast generally on my laptop. One of the minor problems that I have (mentioned previously in this thread) is that the "Turn Windows features on or off" box is blank. If I click on the item, the box comes up and there is the message "Please wait" then the message disappears and nothing happens. Quite a lot of people have this problem and nobody appears to know how to rectify it except by reinstalling Vista. The box listing installed programs is OK. However at the moment I can live with it, I've had enough of messing around with the computer at the moment.

HaHaHaHaHa... I decided that I don't need another computer, especially one with Vista, however tempting, now mine will die in the next few days as my 3 year warranty comes to an end. ;)

When I did the TI v10 restore I used these easy to follow instructions, I'd downloaded and printed them out some time ago. I'd recommend them to anyone else with TI v9 or v10 and whose mind just get befuddled with the usual complicated instructions especially in such a stressful situation. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=168165

Thanks Noreen, :thumb: I use T9, I hope that I never need the info, but certainly worth keeping.

In the instructions the writer suggests that people do a few trial runs BUT STOPPING SHORT OF PRESSING THE "PROCEED" BUTTON. Seems a good idea to me and I wish that I'd done it.

Don't forget to print them out ASAP, In. :)
