I use Avast and although it seems to work okay I have to agree it appears to be quite demanding on resources so I'd be interested to hear if there's anything better (for free) out there. I may have to decide to buy one though.

There's a link here to a review of (someones) top 10 AV software (none of them free though).

been using avast myself of late, hasn't been to bad on resources. Been using threatfire on top of it as well. Think both are decent free products.

It doesn't cause me any problems whatsoever. :thumb:

I don't believe any bloat-free and free antivirus applications exist. I tried Avast and found it bloated, and AVG is bloated now as well. There is another free one, Avira I think, and that seemed quite good when I tried it.

You might want to consider Kaspersky, even though it isn't free. It can be had extremely cheaply, like under £10 for a year!

I don't think anyone would give away something as good as NOD for free would they?  :dunno:  Have you looked at Comodo AV, Paul?

Have a look here (although I don't think that it includes free programs). http://www.av-comparatives.org/ Click on the "Comparatives" link and then on either 17 or 18, read the full report.

That looks good Simon, it is only beta at this stage, tho' it does say version 3 is coming soon, I will keep an eye on it.

Have a karma for your troubles... :karma:

I've been using the free version of AVAST for a couple of years, ever since I started having trouble with my paid-for Norton AV.  I really like it and don't notice it hogging resources - it takes up about 54 MB of space and delays opening programmes like OE and Mozilla for just a few seconds initially (i.e., if you leave Mozilla or OE open it causes no delay).  It updates itself virtually every day, too.  I tried AVG first and found AVAST much better.

No idea if it is any good, just another free option. ;)

If it's anything like the Bit Defender suite, it's OK, but finds LOTS of false positives.

Thanks for the Karma, In!  :)
