Hi, got re-connected last week to idnet, but the problem is i cant use the phone at the same time while im connected to broadband, i phoned bt and they say its not their fault, i tried different filters and still the same, any suggestions? also my speeds have dropped to roughly 250 k compared to roughly 500k...thanks ???

You're describing a classic 'bad filter' symptom. Do you have the new-style NTE5 master socket, with the ability to remove the bottom part of the face plate? If so, try using the test socket that reveals. If that works OK, you have a wiring problem.

As to speed, can you post some stats from your router please? Is it the same line as you were using before?

Thanks for the reply Rik, but why did it work before i got re-connected, and not now? its only been between 3-4 weeks since i got re-connected and nothing was changed, sorry im not up to speed with sockets etc, im using the same line as before also, and a speedtouch 330 modem which ive had for the past 4 years , im not to concerned about my speeds, i can live with that ok, its just the phone thats bothering me really, i remember having the same problem a few years ago, but cant remember how it was sorted

Filters can break and act very unpredictably but that's what it sounds like.

If I was you, I'd also consider moving from the (now ancient) speedtouch to an ethernet based modem or router. The speedtouch (especially with the original CD drivers) can struggle hugely with maxdsl.

Is 250k how many kb/second you get on a download, your profile or your sync rate?

Barndog

250 kbps if im doing a movie say from good torrent sites, but only half the speed i was getting, i know the speedtouch is old but its never let me down for good speeds in the past

Have you checked ALL filters in the house? It could be one attached to another phone you rarely use which is acting up.

The speedtouch (from lots and lots of experience with them unfortunately) can be very problematic with high speeds and at 4 years, its quite possible its ready to go to that place up above.

Definitely and update drivers to the latest tho - http://www.thomson.net/GlobalEnglish/broadband-uk/Pages/home-uk.aspx.

You should also try the BT speed tester and note the sync rate and profile.

Well just got an e-mail from Andrew at idnet and he says, he has done tests and it seems my line is not in sync with b/band, he is going to contact bt himself to get it sorted, so hopefully that should sort my problem :thumb:

You have to ask why it isn't in sync... If it turns out its the speedtouch or a filter then BT will bill you for the engineer.

If your connection is out of sync nothing will work which suggests you have an intermittant connection (since you are posting on the forum...) which is even more likely to be a local issue.
