BBC iPlayer "upgrade" disadvantages some small ISPs.

El Reg reports that after the iPlayer HD codec update, the HD content will be delivered via Level3 rather than by Akamai.

While this is all very complex and I barely understand it all, what affect will it have on IDNet as an ISP ?

What is the date of the referendum for England to become an independent country ?

Rik

As I understand it, Alan, it will cut them out from direct peering, increasing their costs for carrying iPlayer traffic. I may be wrong though.

I presume therefore monthly charges to customers will inevitably rise as this cost is passed on. The end result being that small ISPs will become less attractive. It would be nice if a dual arrangement had been made to give ISP's a choice.  BT and Sky will get the HD content etc for free because of their size. It does appear somewhat unfair that this parasite (iplayer) is allowed to breed in this manner

What annoys me is that my money, "the regressive TV Tax", is being used to put up my costs !

My own choice of pricing model would be to make the iPlayer a separate sub for those who want it, Steve. That seems fairer than a general price hike to subsidise the BBC.

My speed is a far cry from what it used to be

6966 I think was the best it's been.  Hopefully only a few days left of this Olympic cr*p.

I agree Rik, for those that want the service let them pay extra for it.

Having been keeping an eye on speeds this afternoon,at this time 1700 my speeds are beginning to return towards normal at 500-700kB/sec I have spent a couple of hours at 75-100kB/sec. The worst part of today if it follows the pattern of the previous couple of days is now over

That fits with what I've heard from Spirella Towers, Steve, the demand seems to have peaked and is now falling back - possibly helped by people pushing off for the Bank Holiday weekend.
