I voiced my annoyance with whom I think was Simon at IDNet on Friday rik.

Told him I was strongly considering a move to O2 if double bogey speeds for £25 were the best I could expect from IDNet . He said the olympics and I player were having a massive effect on their service provision. I asked well what are your plans to deal with it then ? He said they had placed an order for a gig link a while back but BT were slowing it up and that link would triple their capacity, unfortunately it will be nov before that link is in place.

When I think O2 I just cant get it out of my head that people are flocking to them because of the low cost and there are call centres , that service will suffer, its inevitable, and when saturation is reached, well its talk talk all over again. Think I`ll sit it out and see what happens in November.

It would have been Tim you spoke to, Simon's on holiday this week. They sound very similar, which can be very confusing.

The link Tim was talking about is the WBC connection which was ordered in April on a 65-day lead time. The latest date they have is November. BT are really messing ISPs about over this (not to mention that exchange activation dates are slipping back, so they wouldn't be able to move many people anyway).

Rik, would you say my concern about O2 going the over subscription route eventually , call centres and all that are reasonable ?

Since the olympics is petering out, my IDNet connection has had serious life injected back into it. My opinion is that an ISP shows its worth when things go wrong and id hate to be at O2 talking to minimum wage staff in a call centres who couldnt gives a rats a$$.

You do get what you pay for , but surely with 2+ around the corner , the 8MB price will have to come down ?

I personally don't think the 8Mb service will become cheaper, James, due to the way BT prices it. WBC, when BT finally deliver on it, should give similar speeds to O₂.

As to whether it's worth the risk, most people seem pretty happy atm, but we know how quickly things can change. IDNet, and other ISPs, will be making the WBC (ADSL2+) service available as soon as they can, and the underlying architecture of that should allow greater flexibility and a means to deal with the congestion that we've seen this week.

Will the flexibility that WBC offers to idnet affect those of us who are stuck with plain old adsl for some time to come.

I guess that depends on how many people they can migrate, Steve. WBC won't be compulsory, though, I do know. It's a difficult time for smaller ISPs as they try to plan their capacity.

On a sort of related note, my exchange is now due to be WBC-enabled in November - originally, it was June - so it looks like BT are seriously behind with WBC in general.

Same here, Seb, I've gone back from November to Q2 next year. If the same is happening, and it appears to be, with the supply of the connections to ISPs, it's causing major headaches.

Mine is RFS date set : 31/03/2009 - not sure if that's moved, but I seem to remember posting it was Q3 2009 before.

So will this leave more room on the central pipes for the rest of us or will they just try and reduce the number of central pipes in anticipation of planned migration.

I'm not privy to the plans, Steve, but I doubt they would reduce the centrals until they didn't need them. Events of the past week would, I think, have ensured that.

Speed isn't everything... 

I'm still seeing packet loss to several US datacentres. I've checked from 2 IDNet lines on 2 separate exchanges. No joy with support so far. No packet loss to any Europe/UK facilities.
