Dont mention Talk Talk !!

From Nov 08, IDNet was just the best, but....................I have noticed a steady and serious decline in both mail and download speed , to the point were the £25 for an 8MB connection with poor EMail and slow download speed was simply not worth it. My migration to another ISP completes on 03 Sept 2008 , I wont say who they are, but I am sure you can guess.

If IDNet return to the standards they had when I joined and also a reliable adsl2+ with none of the capacity nightmares they are having now ,I will have no hesitation at all in rejoining again.

Has anybody else jumped ship or is considering a move now that IDNet are sufferring so badly ?

Good luck James, hope it all goes well for you.hope you carry on posting.Im not thinking of changing at the moment but wish you well

No move planned here James, but I havn't had any speed issues and I pay £17.99 a month, email isn't a problem for me, as I rarely use IDNet.mail.

Good luck with your move. ;)

Good luck, James. I've not seen any major issues with email since the server failed, though, and I receive hundreds (literally) a day on one of my IDNet addresses.

You can have my bandwidth too.... I also migrate out on the 3rd!

Might be going myself, since i got re-connected i still cant use my phone when broadbands plugged in,they say its sky thats causing this, the thing is nothing has changed so i dont see how this is possible, loved this isp at the start but even my speeds have dropped by half

Rik

If you have that kind of issue, it's unlikely to be ISP related, to be honest, but most likely to be a piece of connected equipment or filter. If IDNet are saying the Sky box, did you try disconnecting that and did it cure the problem?

I have swopped filters Rik, unplugged skybox, and still the same, this only happened when i got re-connected, worked fine before...strange ???

Dont mention Talk Talk !!

only the other day , i got a speedtest result showing 7060 kpbs throughput and i thought , at last we are back on track and i was well happy. before i went to bed, i thought ill just check it one more time, and even though it was late, the result was cr@p , i tried it on 3 other test sites and all the same cr@p result.

i joined other musician forums as i am a keen guitarist and i couldnt use idnet email for the confirmation link as it has gotten so very very slow. i used one of my googlemail accounts and i get the link i need instantly.

i suppose , at this time, me subscribing to idnet could be compared to me paying out £25,000.00 for a Ford Fiesta , in other words, churning out top dollar for a run of the mill  product. would anybody else who is jumping ship agree with this chain of thought ?

Where I am going is costing me £15 quid per month for a 16MB adsl2+ connection and i am told my line stats will support up to 21 MB ,  and with no download cap, not that i download heavily anyway. With £25 for 8MB , at this time with IDNet, it is a no brainer and the only viable choice for me is to jump.

I hope IDNet get back on the rails, I really do and Ive every confidence the new link coming in November will help things immeasurably.  :fingers:

Things already seem to be improving this evening, James, as you may see if you look in the other thread:

Of course, it's entirely your prerogative if you want to leave,

James

James, you havn't actually told us where you are going so that we can draw comparisons, tho' we can all have a good guess . ;) I recall when you came from another cheap operation, Talk Talk to be exact, you were so pleased to get away from them.

At least with IDNet you can escape at 30 days notice without penalty, which I suspect will not be the case at your new ISP.

Despite recent events, which I concede have been less than ideal, I will be sticking it out with IDNet, because I still believe that fundamentally they are a good company that give real personal service.

I wish you well at your new ISP.

I'm suprised Rik said that, as normally we have no problem with other ISPs getting a mention. Feel free to say who you are off too, i'll sort out Rik. He is only joint boss, but does put the most time in!!

Im a littel confused on this point James, there has been so many isps named everyone from Tis  to Bt I have never been asked not to mention any, indeed many are listed and talked about from Zen downwards so cant understand this. ???
As for being the boss,I am totally unaware of any Bosses here. All the moderators have always been very helpful and take some dire puns from me,and they show great fortitude when it comes to helping users and enjoying a good laugh, threads go all over the show, which is not the case on other forums and in my view.....we seem to be just a group of people enjoying being able to share experiences and pass on knowledge  ???

Well I don't know where you're going and I'd like to so that I can do the research.  Considering we all made it to IDNet which isn't one of the run of the mill ISPs, it rather shows that none of us is the staid stick-with-one-ISP type and I for one am constantly looking around at other alternatives.. so which ISP are you going to?

IDNet's lack of communication has been a disappointment. But I feel its a little over the top to jump ship so quickly. A company with such a good reputation does deserve a second chance.

I'm glad to see, as I previously said in another post, that the entire issue was related to capacity and IDNet overselling more so than before.

I'm hoping they've learnt from this and will now start to provide the service they were/are known for.

I don't think it's fair to entirely ignore the BBC iPlayer issues, as they did play a major part in the capacity problems, and as has been said, BT's delay with the WBC provision must have screwed with IDNet's forward planning, but yes, it now seems inarguable that capacity was the issue.  Thankfully, it's now getting sorted, and I am confident that, once again, lessons will be learned from this.

It doesn't really bother me what the reason is.  I just look at the alternatives and wonder if they can do any better.  I know that Eclipse can't because I was much worse off there.  Never got above 2 mbps there even though synching at 7.  Even at my worse speed recently, I wasn't going below 4.  I still don't know where this talktalk guy is going but will they be better or will they suffer similar or worse problems?

Barndog

Where can i get this ADSLnation faceplate then?

I got mine from the horse's mouth so to speak:

http://www.adslnation.com/products/xte2005.php

I posted all about it at the time!

I used the rear terminals with a CAT5 twisted pair to run about 10 meters through the walls and below floors, (out of sight) to my router.

One filter does it all my Sky box included.

BTW I for one am not going anywhere else.
Regards,

Les.

No because they are still the fastest and reliable ISP for me.

I'm wondering if the net is a bit slow for people because a lot of European gamers are running torrents to download the warhammeronline beta that was released just before the weekend.  It's extremely popular and thousands are downloading it which of course, included me.  You never know.  I've said it before and I'll say it again.  I've not noticed any slow down at all, which is odd because the first person who usually notices is me because I game a lot.

No problem.  Unhappy customers tend to check forums more often than happy so I just thought it would be nice for someone to balance it out to let folks know that it's not everyone getting problems.

Rik

That's so true.  :thumb: In practice, it's a small number of people who have been affected by the problem, and now it's been identified, IDNet are taking steps to deal with the congestion.

Sorry for butting in again, but ive been in touch with id net again about my speeds being dropped by more than half, and still have not got any help with this matter, also the phone not working with broadband, ive just bought new filters and unplugged sky and still the same, to be honest im getting a little cheesed of with this, most important is my speeds, im paying now for 2 mb speeds which i think is unacceptable for what i have to pay a month...thanks

Well it sounds like a line fault to me. Something like that has nothing to do with the ISP. Have you told IDNet about this? I'd say you probably need an engineer round. Have you tried the test socket just to rule out internal wiring?

Barndog

Thanks Sebby, if they send an enginner round does that cost me money, surely it shouldnt as it now sounds like bts fault with their line, if i am charged do you know roughly how much they charge? and for Rik..I got a message from James saying he doesnt think its idnets fault, and it sounds like a line fault, just to make it clear i love idnet and would really like to stay, i just wish i had no problems and great speeds like before, should i mybe phone bt and explain the problem to them, then mybe they could sort it out with no charge, since its not my fault....thanks again

Rik

BT won't deal with you on an ADSL issue, Barndog. If they do send an engineer out via IDNet, and the engineer finds no fault or a fault on your side of the master socket, it will cost you about £169. :(

Unless you have multi-room, I'd suggest keeping the Sky box unplugged as they are notorious for causing ADSL problems. Where does your router connect, to the master, or a hard-wired extension, or via a 'loose' extension?

It definitely doesn't sound like an IDNet issue to me. BT will charge if they find the fault is to do with internal wiring or any of your equipment, which is why I'd suggest you try to the test socket if you haven't already. :)

What you also should try (assuming it still works) is the actual speed test. This bypasses IDNET's network entirely.

Change your username in your router to: speedtest@startup_domain
The password is ignored by the server.

Open up a browser and visit http://speedtester.bt.com

You should try it a few times at different hours of the day. This data is recorded (used to be anyway ;-)) by BT and they can bring this up through woosh (line test system).

Wish I could get half of that at the moment. I have to spoken to support and sent all my BT speedtests and I have been asked to report back after the weekend if no improvement so :fingers: Funnily enough since I spoke to them the 2 day time Speedtests since have been down from the usual.

You should definitely try changing the username and then use the BT speed tester.

Kitz gives slightly different instructions http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btwspeedtest.htm I will try this as it is important for me to try and identify who is responsible for the congestion I am suffering.

Both set of details should work.

Good luck!

Steve

I tried last night to connect to the BTw website to test my download  connection using the instruction above and also those illustrated on the kitz website. The router said I had connected but I was unable to access the website whether it was down, busy or not available any more I dont know.Mind you I couldn't access the normal way via my idnet connection.
