No problems here, but IDNet are aware of a batch of logins at ~13:45, so something fell over, though whether it was BT or IDNet is not immediately apparent.

Give support a call if you're still experiencing problems, Noreen. I sense, since I haven't heard anything back since I phoned, that it's a BT issue.

Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 06, 2008, 18:36:03
Has your sync speed altered, Drummer? If not, then it's almost certainly a PPP drop. (Is your Netgear still on BST by any chance?)

Haha, well spotted that man.  Have a karma.

Had a lost connection to IDNet today:

Fri, 2008-11-07 16:08:17 - LCP down.
Fri, 2008-11-07 16:08:27 - Administrator login successful - IP:192.168.0.2
Fri, 2008-11-07 16:08:30 - Initialize LCP.
Fri, 2008-11-07 16:08:30 - LCP is allowed to come up.
Fri, 2008-11-07 16:08:58 - CHAP authentication success

I hope it's just IDNet and not my new Netgear DG834G that arrived today. It really felt like downgrading when going from a hardware linux router to this, but needed the wireless functionality. All ADSL settings are per IDNet's instructions, with MTU defaulted at 1458.

WOW!!!!!!!!  dont know what happened there. dropped connection about 4.00pm had to go out and when I got back had no lights at all on the router :o :o. powered down for a couple of mins then plugged back in and its up and running. slightly slower sync though same as yesterday
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:17:00
The slower sync will be down to the time of day, Baz, there's more noise around by now.
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Baz on Nov 07, 2008, 17:27:41
its usually very stable though Rik.

is this going to be up and down until the router prob is fixed do you know as Ive just had another one
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:29:09
When do you normally sync though, Baz. A morning sync will get the highest speed, by the time the street lights are on, you could lose 200k or more to noise.
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Baz on Nov 07, 2008, 17:31:28
hope ive got this right here.......sync as in connection speed ?
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:35:02
The very same, Baz. When the router connects to the DSLAM at the exchange, it negotiates a rate which will be affected by your attenuation, target noise margin and prevailing noise. After dark, the ambient noise goes up due to street lights, propagation of radio waves and, often, cross talk as more people are using the net.

For maximum stability, synching at this time of day will give you a more reliable connection whilst synching in the morning will give you a faster one. That said, my router's been up for 45 days now, having synched in the morning. :)
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Baz on Nov 07, 2008, 17:40:35
thats what I was going to say Rik, the router is always on and has been synced at 8128 kbps for ages until this recent drop. then at a lower rate after a re boot
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:42:09
So what's your current sync speed, attenuation and noise margin, Baz?
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Baz on Nov 07, 2008, 17:47:26
Connection Speed     7712 kbps     448 kbps
Line Attenuation       36.0 db       18.0 db
Noise Margin                 8.9 db        23.0 db
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:49:16
Looks like you've got a 9db target noise margin, was it always like that, Baz?
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Baz on Nov 07, 2008, 17:49:52
no has been 6 before
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:52:13
It looks like the BT line management software has decided your line has been unstable, then, Baz, and tried to remedy it by increasing the margin. That would cost you about 500k, so it would explain the difference in the sync figures. Re-boot the router in the morning, see if it recovers, if not then try to maintain that sync for 14 days plus, after which the margin should be reset.

I'm not sure it was just iDNet that were affected.  I was out yesterday and when I got back my Demon connection was down.  Not just lack of sync but no connection.

I rebooted the modem and got the connection back but forgot to check the logs to see what time it went down.  We've had torrential rain all day so that may have caused it.

Demon's mailservers were down for almost 24 hours last week, so it's not just iDNet that has problems.   :)
Title: Re: Loss of PPP
Post by: Lance on Nov 10, 2008, 08:23:22
That's very true. With a couple of problems being BT's fault, there is always plently of scope for other ISPs to be affected as well.  :)

will this re set the 145 day count I was waiting on.  I have this

Connection Speed     7936 kbps     448 kbps
Line Attenuation    36.0 db    17.5 db
Noise Margin    8.7 db    23.0 db

It may only have been PPP then, Baz, which won't affect the 14 day target.

There's nothing you can do, Baz, and rarely anything IDNet can do. BT use the argument that if the noise margin was raised for stability, then it needs to be at that higher figure. However, hopefully, a 14+ day sync will reset it to 6db, that's what is meant to happen. :)
