do you know in FF3 if you can disable that Smart Location Bar which guesses what you want as you are typing in the address bar. I dont like it so far.
Try this Baz http://bbayles.googlepages.com/disable_slb.html
Nice link, Glenn. :thumb:
yeah good link thanks Glenn.
heres another one for you then :) when I opened FF3 after using FF2 I had quite a few bookmarks missing. Use FF2 again and they are still there :dunno:
How did you moved to bookmarks to FF3?
bookmarks were imported from IE to FF2 originally Rik. I just thought that they would be all there when upgrading to FF3
Strange Baz, I never lost any in the transition, all went over automatically. ???
I take it you didn't install over FF2 from what you say, Baz, so did you do anything specific within FF3 to import the bookmarks, or let it do its thing?
Are the bookmarks in the same location for FF3 as 2, by that I mean is FF3 pointing to the same dir as the bookmarks for ff2?

just let it do itself
It would be worth following Glenn's link, then, and importing your v2 set.

dont know about that Glenn, how will I find out. I have FF2 and FF3 in seperate folders when I downloaded FF3 incase I wanted to go back to FF2
FF3 has a totally new method of storing bookmarks.
The easiest method of transferring them is to install the Febe extension on both versions then backup bookmarks for FF2 and restore them into FF3.
In fact use Febe to copy all your settings and preferences across.
I second the FEBE recommendation, Alan. Excellent addon.
ooooo..that sounds good and easy. off to look now ;D.........
but the latest version doesnt work with FF2. an older one is available, will that do?
Does the import button on FF3 import from FF2? If not then export your bookmarks from FF2 to a file, then import into FF3 from that file.

It should do, Baz, or do what Glenn suggests.

It seems that Febe doesn't migrate data between FF2 and FF3, sorry about that
Here is guidance on the Febe Forum (http://www.customsoftwareconsult.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1053)
No worrys Alan. Ive blagged my way through it now ;D exported FF2 bookmarks then just imported into V3 after deleting the ones already there. dont understand whyit didnt work first time. :dunno:
back to the Smart Location Bar.........found this (http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/06/17/dont-think-the-firefox-3-awesome-bar-is-awesome-heres-how-t/) thats tells you how to turn it off. it works too.
Thanks all :thumb:
Thanks, Baz. :thumb:
I don't know why they had to change the file formats with FF3. It was so easy before, as you could just copy and paste stuff from one profile to another. :dunno:
It's something which software developers seem to revel in, sadly. :(

It seems that the developers thought the SQLite database and Json were much more secure , except for the FF3 addon SQLmanager which gives complete access to the databases. Go figure.
The Sqlite databases made it easier to develop the AWesome (Awful) bar apparently.

There must be a reason. Mozilla don't strike me as the kind of developer that changes things for the sake of it, though software developers do tend to be unpredictable. :P
Improved security, at a guess?
Yep, most probably. :)
Are you still running FF2, out of interest, Rik?
Yup. I guess I'll have to make the move soon. :)
I think you should. The time feels right. ;)
The time is never right. ;)
Is the consensus to install over or go for a separate install, btw?
IIRC, I just installed over the top and had no issues. :)
Thanks. :thumb:
If you overlay it on top of FF2, it will import all your settings. :)
Plus, knowing you Rik, if it goes wrong you can simply revert to one of your numerous back-ups!

Same here, no issues at all. :thumb:
A word of warning if you are using the Yahoo Toolbar Add in on Firefox 3 don't install the latest update to the Add in it crashes Firefox on start up.
Useful to know, Ray. :thumb:
Thanks everyone. :)

Shouldn't that be, "a word of warning if you're using the Yahoo Toolbar: don't!" ;D :out:
;D
Good point, Seb. :)

I don't usually, Sebby, I'd tried it in the past and disabled it, but it got it's self on a list of updates when I started Firefox this morning and I'd hit the update button before I'd noticed it lurking at the end of the list. It won't bother me again it's now been un-installed. ;)
:hehe:
I think we've all been there, Ray, some apps are very persistent. :(
Anything particular in mind, Rik? *cough* Norton *cough* >:D
So come on Rik, have you taken the FF3 plunge yet? it really is quite pain free.
No, I've been busy with new toothbrushes and bread machine this morning. :) I'll probably do the notebook later, or Wednesday. ;)
No excuses, it only takes 5 minutes max.. ;D
It's not the time. :)
Chicken.. ;D
Yup. ;D
FF3 is great, I'd never switch back to IE for general browsing.
I always preferred FF2 to IE or Opera. I'll leave others to note the past tense. ;)
Main machine or just the laptop, Rik?

El Reg (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/15/reg_readers_and_firefox/) reckons FF3 is the most popular browser for visitors to it's site.
A better browser for better browsers :thumb:

All three, Lance.
One thing that does niggle me, though, is the way it puts a bar at the end of a truncated bookmark or page title. Anyone know if this can be changed? (screenshot below)

I've never seen that happen, Rik.
It's picking on me, then. :)
I don't get any red squiggles on mine Rik.. ;D
:out: :duck:
    ;D
This is what I get, Rik.

Thanks, Ray. I wonder if it's a font issue?
Oh mine is different to both of yours.
I don't have NEWS and WEATHER or Hardware & support.
:hehe: :out:
My computer updated to 3 ok, but my wife's laptop wouldn't. Eventually I just installed 3 over the top of 2 and it was fine. Of course I backed up with MozBackup (http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/) first.
Do you see my problem, though, Colin. A quick Google shows some discussion of the issue, but it seems to relate more to web page display than program. I'd guess, atm, that I'm using a font which doesn't contain an ellipsis, but I'm not aware of a setting to change the font (or why it worked in FF2).

Tools > Options > Content?
Solved, I needed a font change in my theme... Changing within FF didn't work. Pesky computers. :)
Glad you are sorted Rik. I thought for a minute that you may need my expert advice. ;D
;D
I did, In. Ray's screenshot gave me the clue, it was using a different font to mine, so it was then down to finding whether it was an internal FF thing, or external. It was the latter, but the puzzle is that it worked fine in FF2.
FF3 does seem to be an almost entirely different beast.
I'm wondering whether it set it's own internal font previously and has now moved to picking up the system font?
It should have retained the settings from FF2. :dunno:
I think it did, in that it looked the same, but it seems to be an issue with font encoding. Google has a lot on the subject, but no obvious solutions. It's simply a case of it handling the ellipsis differently for some reason. The font I was using didn't have one, so FF2 was creating it or getting it elsewhere, while FF3 doesn't.
Glad you solved this one, Rik. :)
Yup, fontastic result. ;)
