Title: Email software
Post by: Baz on Feb 27, 2009, 17:51:33
heres a strange one. just noticed that when using Outlook Express that the spell checker had stopped picking out words. Did a check manually and it was flagging every word, it, and, here etc. saying they were not in the dictionary. looked in the settings and it has the langauge for the checker as french :dunno:

havent changed anything apart from, which I think it might be related to, installing Office 2007. is there some setting in there do you think

I think Office 2007 defaults to French for reasons best known to MS, Baz.

Solution here? Baz

http://blogs.msdn.com/dgoldman/archive/2007/01/03/how-to-fix-the-outlook-express-spelling-checker-when-the-french-dictionary-is-the-only-dictionary.aspx

Edit: changes to English US probably easier than French though

The quickest fix is probably to use Open Office and Thunderbird  :out:

yes thats true but in my house its a problem of keeping everything easy for all people to use, if you know what I mean ;) have tried open office my self but couldnt get the wife or one son to use it as it was 'awkward' for them saving work, taking it to work and college and having compatibility issues etc.so I got a link from some one on here for a greta site and got office 2007 for £34  :thumb: thunderbird is the same, have tried it but couldnt get used to it. it was a while ago though. similar issue having multiple email accounts for different people  they wanted a easy to use, out-of-the-box program that would work. thunderbird had to be set up for different users which meant downloading add ons or whatever they are called in it, it takes a while to go through the picking up of emails when you need to switch account etc. so I left it.

May try again some time

If your keen on Outlook express windows live mail probably offers more functionality http://www.windowslive.co.uk/mail/ Outlook 2007 is still in my opinion the Rolls Royce email program because of its other functions although saying that on the laptop I always use Thunderbird its quick, very easy to backup and migrate to another machine and you can set up multiple user profiles. I tend use IMAP on all machines and when I download emails to the main machine (Outlook 2007) I leave a copy on the mail server

Thunderbird has no calendar, so it's no good for me. I did try OpenOffice a few years back but found it slow and clunky. I'm sure it's improved a lot now.

Oh ye of little faith  ;)

There is of course a calendar Addon for Thunderbird - Lightning (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/index.html) is a full P.I.M.
