Title: Recommended Wireless Router?
Post by: ogster on Mar 15, 2009, 06:56:41
Hi
I'm moving house shortly from a Virgin Media (ex-Telewest) cabled area to a small village which is BT only and unlikely to ever be LLU'd. Hence I'm looking to move to Idnet who I've only just come across.

Which wireless router is recomended? I see some Netgears listed here
http://www.idnet.net/support/guides.jsp
but I previously hated my 5 year old Netgear ADSL wireless router and lately I've had a good experience with a Linksys.

What does Idnet support and what's the consensus here?

Thanks
Andrew

IDNet can supply a preconfigured Netgear router as you have already discovered. There is a large base of 2Wire 2700HGV users here, but there is no official support as they are all from ex BT Business accounts and brought via eBay. BT are currently trying to stop their use through a firmware upgrade.

Its either that or turn you into a hot spot.

and  :welcome: I think the 2wire 2700HGV is worth a look at if you think you maybe some distance from the exchange. Otherwise whatever you fancy depending on what wireless category you require and more importantly one which you can easily get the router connection statistics from. Its very difficult to get to grips with any connection issues if you cant access the basic data.

Hi, Ogster and welcome to the forum. :karma:

The newer Netgears are better than their predecessors and are probably the easiest router to set up and access. The 2700, as Glenn says, serves those of us on long lines very well, after which I'd say go for a Speedtouch.

what is classed as a long line these days and how can BT stop the use of 2700's.If they succeed  how can the user bypass this.
I was just looking at getting one but might hold off now    BT  :rant2: :rant2:

Say 50db or more, Baz, or alternatively a line which is prone to noise. BT are upgrading the firmware on some 2700s, but we think it can be overcome.

I was expecting you to say something on the line of distance from exchange. How can BT do that if you are not with them, Im confuddled now  :dunno:

The router 'phones home' at intervals and downloads updates to the firmware. This is hard-coded into the router, and nothing to do with the ISP your are connected to.

Distance to the exchange is indicated by attenuation, 10db = 1km roughly.

cheers Rik. so its maybe worthwhile waiting on the 2700 for a bit

I wouldn't wait, Baz, the problems can be overcome now.

Welcome to the forum, Andrew! :karma:

A Netgear DG834Gv4 or v5, or a SpeedTouch 585v6 or v7 would be my choice. :)

Hi
Thanks folks. I am 0.5KM from the exchange so I think I will go with the supported Netgear for now.

At that distance, you should have no problems.  :thumb:
