Title: Using the BT speed tester
Post by: onerob on Aug 12, 2009, 21:22:52
I want to use BT's speed tester to help diagnose a problem. The trouble is, when it comes to the second stage test (using the BT username), a blank password is required but my router won't let me leave the password field blank. Though I can just enter a bunch of zeros and get a connection, the speed tester then doesn't load the test page. Or was it too busy? I tried a bunch of times.

Anyway, the issue is this: My ping rates and upload speeds are absolutely fine. Speedtest.net reports ping speeds of around 32ms and uploads of 0.8Mb. My download rates vary between 0.3 and 1.6Mb. This evening I've been getting faster uploads than downloads. The initial BT speed test result gave me a similar download score, while telling me my line was rated at 13000. My router tells me that I have a downstream rate of 15391 kbps (sounds healthy).

I've had an IDNet connection for 6 days (having switched from an ISP who were giving me ADSL Max). This means that, technically, I guess I'm still within the training period. Is there a chance that my download speed will improve?

In my experience the second test doesn't work with WBC.

Oh ok. In which case, what is the best way of gathering statistics about a connection? My router (Linksys) doesn't seem to give me the detailed information that gets posted to this forum.

Hi, you could start by posting the first results from the BT tester.  That will give us your profile, sync rate and throughout, which is something to go on.  :)

If its a WAG160N, which seem quite popular, it has a "secret" stats page at this address http://192.168.1.1/setup.cgi?next_file=adsl_driver.htm might work with other linksys models  :dunno: , or you could search google for your particular model.

Interesting. I can't remember the exact model, but will look into it when I get back from work.
