Title: Attachment sizes
Post by: rireed3 on Jun 29, 2010, 18:00:26
Hi all.

I have some big attachments to send to the Council.  Does anyone know if my idnetfreemail.co.uk account has a per message attachment limit?

Thanks,
Richard

Richard, I would assume that freemail addresses have the same limits and ,com ones, if so then take a look at this (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=2303.0)

There may however be a size limit that the council can receive.

Yes, my next worry.  Thanks, though.  Helps me decide what order to try things.

Why dont you upload to your free idnet webspace and send them the link ?

Most emails have a 10mb limit.

What file types are they? If they are data, can you zip them? if they are pictures, can you resize? (although resizing can be bad for photos due for print and magazines.)

The default maximum message size for an Exchange server, which most Councils use, is 10MB.

Email was never built to take large attachments. It's a legacy system that started with a 64k message size :o The underlying protocol hasn't changed.

You may have to either zip the file, even split it into 8MB pieces, and put one part in each message - I suggest 8MB as when encoded it turns into 10MB. Or ask if they have a means of uploading files over at their website.

The sending them a link is a great idea.
