Well as the title says, I need a new mobile phone. My trusty SPV C600 is being a bit problematic of late, i.e. just powering off mid call, stuck buttons, non functioning "joystick" etc.........
So I need a new one, but there is just a myriad of phones / tarriffs out there, I wouldn't know where to start.
Would like a touchscreen that has Wifi. (no iphone's though)
Two that have caught my eye are the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S and I've been reading some reviews and they sound great, although the desire is often marked down due to poor battery life.
So.....can anyone recommend anything?

My Desire depending on use, requires a charge every 1 - 2 days. However, if the GPS is used continuously to track with SportyPal or used as a handheld map with Viewranger, it will only last around 5 hours, but you do have the option to change batteries if necessary. Froyo, Android 2.2, is due to be released on the Desire shortly, which reportedly speeds up the phone operation, it's not slow now.

The Android Marketplace has plenty of choice of apps, not as many as Apple though. One app that is very useful is http://www.appbrain.com/ it lets you search the database available and make your selections available on the phone once you sync it.
Have you considered the BlackBerry Storm (http://uk.blackberry.com/devices/blackberrystorm/)? I was very pleased with mine, and only swapped to my current HTC HD2 because I fancied a change, but wouldn't hesitate to go back to the Storm. The typing errors seen on here from me was mainly because I try to rush, but the 'SurePress' touchscreen technology, with the 'clickable' screen is actually very good, and does aid navigation around the phone, in my opinion. There are lots of apps to choose from, and there is a good online resource at www.crackberry.com, which includes a very informative forum. Not everyone likes BlackBerry, and not everyone likes the Storm, but personally, I found it very good.
Can I ask why no iPhones?
I was thinking that, the 3Gs new or secondhand is an excellent phone. Despite all the Apple bashing with v4 it's selling very well. There are hints of a new delay in orders been fulfilled recently possibly due to a modification to the antennae

Exactly what I was thinking.
I like my Samsung Jet - but keep it turned on. If I power off during the day (at work) I have to recharge every day. Leaving it powered up and silent, I get 3 - 4 days per charge.
Go figure.

I have an iphone and I honestly wouldn't recommend it to anyone, unless they want apps. The signal strength with it under Vodafone is poor at best. The only place I get a full strength signal is in work (where I'm not allowed to use it!) as our building is about 600 yards from the transmitter. Oddly though, I live about 600 yards from the transmitter in the opposite direction, and only get 2 bar reception.
I wish I'd got a Blackberry Storm as suggested above, but there were a couple of reviews that put me off it, so I got the iphone. I don't actually use the phone much itself these days, so I'm paying for the apps, internet access and the large screen (which was the deciding factor for me).
I installed JuiceDefender on Thursday evening, charged the phone overnight, and today, 33 hours after taking it off charge (yes, I was up around 5am to go to work), it is showing 53% charge.

Well I went out this afternoon and have returned with a HTC Wildfire. The desire's little brother, easy to setup and I love the sense UI. Posting this message on it LOL. Not looked at the app market yet , there's so much on it out of the box!

Sounds like the firmware isn't updating the battery charge level or the startup is taking a lot from the battery (logging onto a mobile network takes a fair bit of power)
