iTunes insists that my current iOS 4.02 is the latest version. ???
Has anyone with a Touch managed to get the update to download yet?

Hi

Have updated both my iPhone 3G and iPhone4 with no problems, not that I have had any problems anyway.

iPhone4 does have a better battery life over the 3G, 3G phone does seem a bit faster in getting websites ETC than before.

Did you update an iPhone Gary, just wondering if phone users are getting the update first.

Ways of Jailbreaking it have already been found http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/09/09/ios_4_dot_1_jailbreak/

The question is Apple's continuing development of the current iPhone software release designed to increase performance or to prevent jailbreak?

Updated my phone last night, hopefully will solve the problem where I put people on hold with my ear!
Just updating the ipod.

What is a pain is that its a 500mb download (which failed after 180MB first time) for the iphone, now another 332mb for ipod, then later my will will update her phone, another 500mb, shame you cant do a download as you would an ms service pack.

Most companies don't think about the end user when they produce downloads. MS probably has to, given it's huge user base. Businesses would not tolerate downloads for every computer. Maybe Apple can learn from MS?

Apple make hardware as well Rik well specify so different Macs and phones have different updates, my new Mac has different version of OSX 10.6.4 to my last one so its all tailored to suit, its the only way to do it as they update drivers etc with each update specific to that machine.

MS support a practically unlimited variety of machines and manage to release service packs that can be installed on anything, so why cant apple on a limited number of devices? if I could download a 600mb file which would update all 3 devices that would be better than 2x 500 plus 1x 300

No Microsoft release updates that patch their OS and give you third party drivers and thier software, Macs are more specific, a 2008 imac has different hard drives keyboards graphics etc than a mid 2010, even screen firmware, so the updates have to be different for each batch of machines. Its not exactly hard to download as your software updater does it, also different macs have different versions of ilife as well, which once again need individual patching. There is really no issue, your machine downloads what it needs for its own hardware/software etc, that's it.

Not forgetting the Apple combo OS updates which are applicable to all machines (non mobile ) that will run that particular OS

The same can be said of Sony right now they just patched the PS3 to stop a hack, intellectual rights are patched as much as anything else

Very true, just one easy download does it all, my new i5 mac has had a patch for its screen brightness, my old one same size screen did not, I guess different screens and firmware.

Albeit a larger download for the combo but usually more efficient with several machines to update.

Very true, also more thorough is its a big update. Saying that I just let my updater do it all. Must admit even though its a an i5 680 dual core with HT its fast, I know Ghz are not the be all and end all but 3.6 with turbo boost to 3.8 is great geekbench score was 32 bit - 7021
64 bit - 7801 thats almost 400 ish points better than late 2009 i5 quad.
