The latest version of Google's Android mobile operating system has arrived, on the web giant's own handset.
Android 2.3, also known as Gingerbread, is running on the Nexus S handset. The SDK for the mobile OS has been made available for other developers too.
Gingerbread brings a new black-themed user interface, which Google promises is easier to use and more power efficient. The keyboard has been tweaked, with keys reshaped and repositioned to make typing easier, and copy and paste has arrived.

That's one thing I don't like about Android. It all seems a little bit fragmented as far as upgrades go.
They really need to get a concerted upgrade programme running, don't they.
I believe Google said in the past couple of weeks, around 80 - 85% of handsets that have connected to the Marketplace recently, are using some form of v2. I wonder how that corrolates with iPhones and v4?
The delays with Android updates seem to be the carriers holding things up to add all their crud to the OS. Something, of course, that Apple doesn't allow.

It's why I enjoyed buying from Scan, the machine arrived fully patched with no bloatware and any software installed on the drive I specified. It took me a week to get over the shock. ;D
Takes all the fun out of it, though. ;D
Ah, but I don't consider pain to be fun. ;D One Evesham machine required 69 patches on delivery. No wonder they went bust.
I think I maybe going with Scan next time I buy.

The IOS is bound to be fragmented for three reasons IMO 1. the number of jailbroken devices which tend to not to run the latest OS 2. Devices such as the iPad which have only just gone to 4.2.1 from 3.2. 3. Legacy devices such as the iPhone 2g/3g where it makes sense performance wise to stay on version 3.

Yes, but the upgrade roll outs are simultaneous, Steve, yes? Regardless of whether the user applies them. With Andriod, the 'stock' 2.2 was available for download long before the network branded versions, then you also have all of the modded ROMs on places like XDA.
I guess so as there are no Network branded iPhones yet.

Just got mine today. So far I've seen new Adobe Reader, Google Search and Wi-Fi Hotspot apps, as well as a different font used in the UI.

Its quite an improvement, the whole phone just seems more lively. Apps open faster, there are some new widgets from HTC and on the market. overall the phone is much smoother.

I doubt that we'll see Gingerbread on the Wildfire though....
Might become a bit like the PC market where you can install the OS but it might not run well on elderly hardware.
