It doesn't seem five minutes since it was only on one or two phones!

Indeed. And that is now a problem because developers for Andriod have so many different hardware permetations they have to allow for. I've read that Google are likely to try and start restricting hardware specs supported in the next version because of this problem.

It's reducing choice for consumers too.  Not so long ago, you could look at SE, HTC, Samsung, and they'd all be different.  Now, underneath thier various skins, they're all the same.

Indeed, these days its either iOS, Andriod, BB's OS or WP7. Even BB seems to be starting to look at Andriod by giving the playbook ability to run Andriod apps.

I'll stick to Symbian Series 40 phones as long as they are made I think

The Blackberry taught me that multitasking phones are not really my cup of tea as I just generally send and receive texts and make and receive calls.

The latest phones don't always come with the latest versions of Android either  ??? Saying that the HTC Sensation is released today Sim Free, and that is a nice phone, more robust than the Samsung G2 which seems to have a very thin and flimsy back plate saying that trying to get covers of HTC phones can be like drawing the sword from the stone. Android was recently said to be the new Windows for malware for smartphones too.

"The situation with the Android OS is becoming similar to the current situation with Windows,” wrote Kaspersky Lab expert, Yuri Namestnikov. The most prone Android devices are those which have been jailbroken, giving users administrative access over the platform akin to what many Windows users enjoy on their systems. And, as in the Windows world, most users are running out of date versions of the Android OS and ignore security alerts as well, Namestnikov wrote

In May Android malware was supposedly up 400%

I wont be ever using NFC for shopping with Apple or Android phones.

Might not have a choice Gary,

If NFC works as well as my proximity access card for work does we'll have nothing to worry about as you'll need about half a dozen swipes to get it to read  ;D

On some readers my access card gives 'Fault reading the card' - door open.

The reader just doesn't respond at all in my case (usually beeps and LED strip turns from red to green and the door opens). it usually decides to play up on an outside door when its freezing or pi**ing down.
