Being male my phone calls tend to last 20 seconds at most. "Pub? Yeah.. 10 minutes"... "Footy? Yeah.. See you later" and so on but I spoke to a good friend this evening for about 30 minutes and at various points during the call there was very audible "crackling" which would last between 30 seconds and a minute before disappearing. Over the course of the phone call it probably happened two or three times.
When the call finished I immediately grabbed an old analogue phone and tried the quiet line test but I couldn't hear a thing but I wasn't about to spend 30 minutes with the phone next to my hear waiting for the noise to re-appear.
Is there any point at all calling BT when the noise is intermittent or will they just run a test there and then and dismiss me simply because there's no noise present at that specific time?
Could it have been his phone, I wonder?
I don't think so Simon. It happened the other morning when I made another call but in that instance I just assumed it was the other persons phone at fault.
Also if you look at the latency monitor in my signature you can see three small instances of packetloss that coincide EXACTLY with the noise during the phone call.
As suspected BT weren't much help at all.

It's always a problem getting them to take action on intermittent faults. Can you move everything to the test socket to eliminate the possibility of a local wiring issue?
All the extensions are disconnected Rik. Openreach checked all the internal wiring (including communal areas) back in January and couldn't find any issues at all.
Another idea bites the dust. :(
