Title: outage
Post by: gazzthompson on Aug 22, 2011, 18:00:06
Outage for last hour. No faults on line according to idnet. Router reports disconnected and LCP is allowed.

I can see it now, just like the last how ever many times we have had this happen ill piss about for an hour factory resetting, trying new routers only for nothing to work and the net come on magically in a few hours...(days if anything like last time) . Hugely frustrating.

I noticed a similar problem accessing the internet and idnet email around 5pm on a connection that has been up for 40 days. All stats were good.  I disconnected and reconnected idnet logon in the router to no avail. I rebooted the router and everything was fine; stats unchanged. I have friends that often get this problem over BT, but it is the first time it has happened to me in the years I have been with idnet. In fact I have never had much of a problem other than the odd mass outage when BT turn off idnet. But on the other hand I do not expect domestic broadband over BT phone lines to be a mission critical service. It is just not robust technology. Though for me it has been surprisingly reliable. :fingers:

I have to admit, I can't complain either, and have only had the mass outages you mentioned, Dave.  In fact, I think I even managed to miss one of them!  I'm still on ADSL Max, and happy with it, as it seems to be the most robust service available.

Got an outage right now. Lcp terminated by peer. Having to use 3g in the meantime.

edit: and it's back up. alarm over.

From AAISP's warning system ( http://status.aa.net.uk/ ) issued yesterday morning...................

A warning of BT Planned works tonight affecting all BT lines - Open    Yesterday 11:05:36

As the planned works notice is rather short, we are posting this as a major issue now. We expect all BT lines to go out of service over night from around 2am to 3am. This will not affect BE lines.

I can't even begin to tell you how much these outages by stealth disrupt my work and hack me off :rant2:

My log is showing an outage from 02.01am to 03.27am in the West Midlands. No inconvenience to me whatsoever as I was firmly in the Land of Nod. However, on checking the log I notice that there has been no DSL re-training on reconnection. I am guessing the when BT, rather than the modem/router, pulls the plug this is normal.

Post by: Steve on Aug 23, 2011, 09:23:14
If your still connected locally no re training is required as sync is maintained,it's the PPP reconnect that's required.

The problem is that now I have awful packet loss and ping times pretty much to and from anywhere.

My connection has always been rock solid. Is anyone else experiencing this? I have rebooted my router etc but no change.

Hi Rik,

I have tried at http://speedtester.bt.com but it keeps timing out

Came on last night around 9pm after trying new router etc. Obviously not our problem but no line problems either so apparently unexplained. Just heard from brother who's at home (I'm at work) that nets down again.

I'd be interested to see what your profile is. It's possible that DLM has turned interleaving full on in an attempt to stabilise your line. However, the packet loss suggests that might not be the case. Do you have a spare router you could try?

No, I don't have a spare router at the moment. The BT test however, went through. Here are the results:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 3164 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 1200-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 832 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps

I always get full speed as I am really close to the exchange.

I'll try and get some more stats from my router and post them here. Thanks for the replies :)

It's a bit disappointing that AAISP can pre-warn their customers, granted it was "only" 14 hours notice, when we as Idnet customer got absolutely no warning at all  >:(

Why run a VOIP server on an ADSL link?

It's only a small one with 12k bitrate, it's radio communication based with only a few users. No huge bandwidth.

Incidentally I've just had an email from AAISP promising to fix my line if I switch. Tempting.

It costs nothing to try, free migration in, no fees at all if you leave within 30 days and if they say you need an Engineer call, then you are in exactly the same place as now and free to move to another ISP.

I'm actually not bothering to switch. I really like IDnet support, and how helpful they are. I'm just extremely frustrated at the moment, and was looking into my options. I've already told IDnet to go ahead with the engineer visit, which I think is next Wednesday (or Tuesday, I'll check :D). I just find it very annoying to be left completely in the lurch, and as BT don't tell IDnet anything at all, and what they do tell them isn't passed on to me so I can't even see what's been said. I never trust anything that isn't completely transparent. That's why AAISP's way of doing things is very appealing. You can see faults, you can see incident reports and you can see conversations they have with BT about your issue. While IDnet is great, there is non of that, so I'm left sitting here with no info, no help and no idea what to do other than hope BT don't charge me £200. I have nothing I can even tell the engineer when he comes, but another thing I was just told by my sisters other half is that IDnet support told them not to mention broadband when they arrive, just mention the phone issues or they'll bat me back to IDnet support AND charge me. No one at IDnet has told me that at any point, and if this is true then I'm very glad I was told by my sisters other half and disappointed IDnet didn't warn me of this!

While IDnet are VERY helpful and friendly, and knowledgeable it seems that when you get to a point where there's an actual problem, the help stops and information is scarce. This is THE point where you need help and info the most. Being left swinging in the wind with the threat of £200 charges does not sit well with me. Seriously, if it was any other company and you were left with no info, how happy would you be? I know that in the benefit system, if you haven't got enough info we get loads of flack. It's seems that BT and to an extent ISPs can happily chug along with no form of transparency, which is utterly useless to people paying for a service :(

Your sister must have had a voice fault and hence a voice engineer. You'll, I expect, be having a broadband engineer.

My nm just leapt to 22 from 5.4. No idea why/how but the speed has plummeted to 3mb :(
