Title: modem/router
Post by: Barndog on Oct 23, 2011, 12:24:13
I am getting a new pc next week and am looking for a reasonable priced modem, i dont want to use my current speedtouch as i think that is the reason my games dont start first time when running,i have to reboot in order for them to run, i have had 2 new syatems and its always been the same with the speedtouch, i am looking for something to install on a brand new system, does idnet sell modems or routers, will i drop any speeds also? any recomendations for good modems, i dont want to have to spend lots of money, is wired better than wireless...need ideas please, thanks

IDNet sell routers but not modems, tbh, a router is a much better bet for all sorts of reasons, not least security. You will pay a premium by buying from IDNet, but the router will be setup for you and ready to go 'out of the box'. Otherwise, check Amazon for an idea of what's available. If you have a long line (high downstream attenuation) then it might be worth looking at a 2700 HGV, about £15-20 from eBay.

Wired is better than wireless, more secure and faster, but most routers these days have wireless built in, which you can disable, and it's a good idea to have it in case you move to using a mobile device, eg tablet, notebook, netbook, smart phone or Kindle.

That looks OK, but ask the seller what firmware version they are running.

That's what we want to find out. The setup varies a little between firmware versions.

Go for a NEW one on ebay ... there are a few there and you can often do better than £15 ...

You need a V5 or V6   and then go to http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/141.htm which will help you install it on a non-BT line.   The site will also tell you how to ID the version and using that what to ask a seller about the one they have available.
