I'm tentatively thinking about buying one for my mum at Christmas but having never used one myself I'm not quite sure how someone of my mums generation would get on with it.
Is anyone on here a big book reader and have you used a Kindle? What were your impressions?
Part of me feels she'd prefer the good old paper back.
I agree with you Griff, I would prefer a good book to a Kindle so think of the amount of books you could buy for the price of a Kindle.
My wife and I both own kindles so we're fans ,the big plus for us is that when we are away,(both being avid readers) it saves a lot of space and weight when travelling. In fact I can't ever see me travelling with a pile of books again, it's just not necessary any more, they've survived my rug sack, the hot sun and the beach.
It does take a bit of getting used though,I do miss the feel and 'smell' of a book. They're not difficult to use, the screen is excellent you can have a variety of books to hand in a size no larger than the average paperback however in dim lighting you do need additional lighting which can be provided by some of the official covers although they are a tad expensive.
But if you don't travel, your not short of space and you enjoy shopping and browsing for your books then you probably don't need one yet!
My wife has one and she too thinks its good.nice and easy to use once you get used to the difference.I found things like 'flicking through' as you would with a book is a miss as its a bit restricted to do it.Font size is adjustable if you want.
Steves got some good points about weight and space saving etc.
Lona too about the number of books for the price of a kindle but the plus side is you can get a far lot more on the kindle.There are some good free books too every now and then.
I think the new ones,which my wife has, are only £90 ish,its not a bad price and the build quality is good,well designed.
£90 is a lot of money. I think I'll stick to books. ;D
How do the cost of "e"books compared with the price of new paperbacks from the supermarkets and Amazon?
They tend to slightly more expensive than the equivalent Amazon paperback so will not compete with the supermarket 3 for 2 offers etc.
As good as they sound for some people I'm starting to think it would be wasted on my mum. I guess I'll be spending a fortune at Liz Earle instead!
