Title: windows 8 niggles with Moz & Chrome
Post by: Broadback on Nov 11, 2013, 10:57:23
I am having a couple of niggles under
Windows 8 that I did not have with 7. Quite frequently when loading a web page I get "This Web Page is not available Reload/More when selecting reload it always works fine first time. Secondly with Mozilla Thunderbird when I try to send and email or a newsgroup message it often fails says it is unable to connect, if I leave it for a while it goes ok. Any suggestions please?

Sounds more like a connection issue to me.  Is this a wired or wireless connection?

Could be DNS related I suppose. Have you updated to 8.1? Try clearing the computers cache, make sure you do not have two firewalls active or clashing AV protection.

A stab in the dark, but could a router need updating to be fully compatible with Windows 8.1?

Possible, I know some routers got a bit quirky but thats generally the UI not the routers functioning, but anything is possible.

I've been having this happen a lot recently although it seems to have fixed itself in the last couple of days. The initial connection fails to find the server but a reload always works. I've no idea what the cause is or was and I'm on Windows 7 :dunno:

I also used to have the issue a lot of the time, but it hasn't happened for a while.  I'd put it down to the old 2Wire 2700 router, as it stopped doing it when I replaced that.  :dunno:

Is that a Netgear Simon?

No, the 2Wire 2700 was one of the old BT hubs a lot of us got off eBay, as they were pretty good with long lines.  I did actually replace it with a Netgear DGN2200, but I had all sorts of problems with it, which are documented here (http://www.idnetters.co.uk/forums/index.php/topic,30041.0.html), so I replaced that as well, and now have a Billion 7800N, which has been rock solid.

I still have the original Netgear supplied by IDNet when I first signed up in January 2010 - gosh, nearly four years ago!   :o

Must admit I'm very Happy with the R6300v2. great signal, no blackspots, and the beamforming helps legacy devices using 5Ghz to be 'pinpointed' so the signal is always as good as it can be in theory. Pings are good, and its not huge, unlike the R7000 Nighthawk which is massive. Now I have a A6200 usb wifi adaptor plugged into my TV speeds are amazing for youtube, netflix etc. Faster than homeplugs.
