Title: 4G arrives on my Three contract check out the speed!
Post by: mk1 on Feb 09, 2014, 12:17:50
Well I finally had the change to try out 4g on three yesterday and I am just amazed at the speed! Its note just slightly quicker is almost as fast as fibre! If this keeps up it looks like perhaps normal landline broadband could have a real competitor, especially as my contract has unlimited allowance with tethering included!

I wish my landline as up to this!

Very nice! I wonder how it will hold up with more people converting over to 4g in time? I know for some networks this will be a longer term thing due to additional costs, but as Three don't charge anything extra they could gain a fair number of users.

If it holds up fine, and ping isn't critical to the user, it will certainly offer an alternative to broadband through the landline.

It went live on Thursday to limited locations, they hope to have 50 large towns/cities covered by the end of the year, and most masts updated by the end of 2015.

Yes I suspect the speeds won't last as most phones probably are not 4g yet! Still good to see 4g finally rolling out now :)

4G seems great, thing is once again we have not even got 3G where we live, O2's 4G rollout should be better on lower frequencies but they have limited spectrum as they didn't buy much.EE seem ok but the complaints about the 3G network are huge, and 4G falls back to 3G for calls so you need that part working well. I can add it as a bolt on on O2 and on Three it will be fun to try as its free but I'm not holding my breath to when it will arrive down this way. Speeds seem to take a hit in areas of large uptake, great for tablets and laptops but I cant see it replacing landline based vdsl because of the cost of data on most networks. EE charge a mind melting £74.99 for 50GB  :eek4:

I've unlimited date for less than £35/mnth including tethering!  :P

How many thousands does it cost per megabit though!?  :swoon:
Wow, £35 for unlimited? I cannot even find more than a Gig on 3g service providers. :(

I've got a very old SIM only contract with O2 which gives me unlimited 3G for just over £21p/m.  Not sure if that will carry over to 4G though.

I only got temporary unlimited usage years ago, but even lost that (250mb-300mb I think) when I changed to a new sim with O2. :(
The bigger companies slowly reduced the rates and deals etc. I wonder if they will do the same with 4G? Loads of too good to be true deals, that slowly evaporate. Worse, they won't make the mistake of lifetime deals this time round, and will no doubt limit them to 12 months in the T&C ("subject to change" etc).

I believe the one plan from three on sim only is £20 a month, gives all you can eat data and allows tethering.

I signed up to the 3 One Plan sim only for £15/month 2 weeks ago (now £20/month) so there are cheap deals out there.

Take a look on here for current deals http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/best-sim-only-deals-megathread-1623625

Might go for that then if I can scrounge an old android phone off someone. Was going to repair a screen on one, but people prefer throwing them out then even getting them repaired for free. :(
