Not sure if this has been posted already or not. Vista SP1 is now ready to download if you have plenty of bandwidth to spare.

Always one of the first things I turn off on a new machine!
I think I'll wait a while before I install this.

iirc there is going to be a further month before they put it on automatic updates.
I still preffer to have windows set up to let me approve updates manually though.
Thanks, but no thanks! :out:

Absolutely. Just wanted to make sure that in a brief moment of insanity I hadn't turned it on - I hadn't!
:phew:
Personally, I always slipstream a service pack, and never install it over my existing installation. That way, there's no chance of things going wrong, and performance tends to be better. :)
Just downloaded it and and so far it seems to make Vista run a lot smoother. Early days yet I will let you know how it goes.
Just a quick update! Service pack 1 which i installed last night seems to be running fine, i've had no problems as of yet and windows does seem to be more smoother and faster. I've noticed that i'm using less Ram too. Pre service pack i was using between 30-40% of my 2GB now i'm uing between 20-35%.
That's good news. Thanks for posting back. :)
That is good news. Perhaps this'll make Vista move towards the OS it should've been. :)
What, OS X?? ;D
XP SP3 RC is also available :)
I'm waiting for the final. It shouldn't be long now that Vista SP1 has had its moment. ;)
My New pc should arrive next week so I'm hoping its had Vista SP1 put on already :fingers:
My laptop is running Vista and is running quite well, is it worth upgrading with the service pack ?. I am a strict believer in the rule "if it aint broke, dont fixit".

if you look at the review for SP1 though they recommend installing it talos http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/171567/ for most it will work, just like SP2 for XP its always the same FUD with any new service pack ::)
I backed up my PC on Sunday using Acronis, so I'm feeling brave and started the update. Keep your fingers crossed! :P
Could be an interesting Easter for you then. ;)

Well if I have to restore it'll give me some sense of confidence in Acronis itself...
It's always worked for me. :)
Must admit very very impressed with SP1 Never ever got anywhere near these speeds before.

Ouch. Recovered OK?
Fine thanks! Amusing it then wanders off to microsoft to find a solution and then leaves you none the wiser.
I have a nice week old image of XP sp2 its tempting to return :)

Where's my Windows 2000 SP5?
/grumble
It's on the top shelf, next to Playboy. :) :out:
Windows 2000... I remember that. Great OS; just a bit slow. :eyebrow:
I skipped W2K and went straight from 98SE to XP.
Jumped on the Win2k boat quickly, and thank goodness I did since Windows ME was rather shambles. It's been good. So good in fact, we're only just thinking about buying licenses to upgrade the machines. XP licenses that is. XP has been pretty good since SP2!
The main criticism I level at win2k is the pretty iffy boot time. That and the USB2 support is a little tempramental. Otherwise it is absolutely fine. Caches less agressively than XP perhaps, but has a tiny (comparitively) fresh install.
Ah well, time to upgrade to XP. I'll see you Vista guys in 5 years... maybe.
I always had a soft spot for 2000, but I just found it quite slow, even on a powerful system. XP all the way... :)
I found this which makes Kaspersky even better value. This is the whole security package Anti Virus,Firewall ect.

Compare this to ESET security package.

Indeed 2000 was one of the first NT code based OSes released for use on normal workstations and was therefore, the first of the more stable OSes. After 95 and 98, this was a real blessing!
Windows 95 - a re-boot every hour... :)
Which was better than the every 45 minutes with Windows 98! When it shut down properly it was more by luck, I seem to remember!
You youngsters don't know you're born - now Windows 1, that was a real man's OS. ;D
I'm afraid I only go as far back as Dos 6 and Windows 3.1 :)

Nice link Bill - sure that will come in handy. I'd be curious to know exactly how much "tons of extra space" is though 8)
I missed DOS 4, went straight from 3.3 to 5.0. Surprisingly, my DOS 3.3 disk still works. It comes with GW-BASIC and an ATI EGA video driver that is under 40KB total. I did actually manage to get Windows 3.1 to run on it many years later as an experiment (this was a 12MHz 286), but had to delete all the help files amongst other things to fit it on the hard disk.
Belive it or not i still have a pc with dos 6.22 on it (and i still use it 486 dx33 4mb ram 270 MbHdd) i also always have a virtual machine on my laptop with 6.22 on it.
albeit modded with network drivers & software.
pretty fast o/s on a p4 dual core in a vm.
also always have a linux o/s with a lot of network tools loaded in a vm (and on a pc at home as well)

I spent hours playing on the Grandstand on pong and those tank games :D

Classic TV - used to love that :)
Actually, I think it was question of sport on before Blakes 7 :D
Wasn't it Top Of The Pops? - I seem to remember Blakes 7 was on a Thursday night - at some point at least
Na, it was definitely QoS, or a similar sports panel game. I'm pretty sure it's QoS though.
Clips here:

I can't find out what was on before it. I've found out every single piece of trivia about the show, but not what was on before or after it.
I didn't realise I was only 5 when it started!
I wonder if there's a 'historical Radio Times' site anywhere, Niall?
hi dudes long time no seen!
i downloaded this a while back and it did not like my nvidia drivers >:(
basically destroyed my resolution and i could not get it back. had to uninstall the service back completley.

Was it one of the betas that you used, or the finished version of SP1?
could have been a beta. it was a while ago ???
I final version has only been out a few weeks, so if it was a while ago it must have been a beta :)
Hopefully whatever caused that issue has been fixed then :)
Always slipstream a service pack, where possible; it works much better. :)
Another way if possible, wipe your drive and start fresh, then install all your drivers and applications after
You should definitely slipstream if you're going to do that, Gary. :)

Agreed Sebby, still waiting for the PC to turn up this week, so first things first ;D then I shall be doing that, its the best way of installing a service pack to avoid conflicts.
downloaded SP1 2 weeks ago and its running a charm.
bonuses are that it now knows i have 4 gig of ram instead of 3.5 and directx 10 is with it.
so far so good. system is running alot quicker :thumb:
I take it you're running 64-bit Vista?
nope 32bit. should be running 64bit but computer strangly came with 32bit OS
New laptop came with Vista SP1 already installed, thank goodness. ;D All seems to run very fast.
Quote from: TheMonkey on Apr 11, 2008, 12:20:38

So how's it handling the memory addressing?
i'm a bit of a wally so i'm not sure what you mean by memory addressing.
all i know is that in the system status scrren it used to show 3.53 for ram now it reads 4.
Traditionally, Windows uses memory space above 3GB for it's own purposes and that of the system, eg the graphics card memory. This is a throwback to the original memory limitations of the x86 chips. It's sounds as if Vista is abandoning that backwards compatibility in some way, I'm just curious how.
I also wonder, Rik. I thought it could never show 4GB on a 32bit OS...
This may help? not sure whether 32 bit can use it though.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605) :)
Thanks, Steve. That seems to confirm that you need a 64-bit OS to see more than 3.12GB. Odd.
so in summary 32bit will know about the 4 gig but still can't use it?
bloody usless gits >:(
AFAIK, it's not Microsoft, it's the actual architecture.
It's not down to MS, Monkey, it's a limitation of 32-bit OS. :(
is it safe to go 64bit now? are drivers still an issue or has it got a lot better?
I believe that drivers are much less of a problem, but there are still several popular bits of software that don't support it.
yeah i heard the Adobe Photoshop CS3 is not 64bit. :o
does that mean (yeah i'm really stupid :D ) that 64bit OS wont support a 32bit programme?
I'm using Vista 64bit ultimate home edition (or whatever it's called).
Everything works with it, but a lot of programs are still 32bit only. Some programs cause BSOD (Samsung monitor calibration, as I found out last week :().
Most programs are still 32 bit. You have two folders on your C: drive for these. One is programs and the other is programs (x86) for 32 bit. Looking through my programs now, the 64 bit folder has Logitech game panel (for the G15 keyboard) and Ventrilo. All the other programs in there are Windows things that are a part of the operating system. The other folder however, is full of stuff, as no one seems capable of using 64bit yet. That makes me wonder why they were all bragging about it approximately 5 years ago, claiming everyone will be using it in 2 years.
How many people went out and spent a fortune on 64bit CPUs? I remember that I was lucky and won a 3200 worth £640 at the time on jolts website :D Well, I actually won a years ADSL with Nildram, but as I was already with them, I swapped it with a lad that only had 56k at the time :D
I've slipstreamed SP1 onto my 64bit ultimate. It runs a breeze now and believe me or not...it runs hell of a lot better than XP x64. Everything is supported and everything happens when you click!! :D
Call of duty 4 actually runs smoother - whether this is down to XP x64 being a POS who knows?
I suggest if you can, get SP1 its a lot better
I've heard a lot of people say that 64bit runs fantastically compared with 32bit Vista. I would've tried it, but I was just worried about application compatibility.
In all honesty, I wouldn't bother using 32bit Vista. The whole point of it was for the 64bit side of things, to make the most out of modern technology. 32bit is just cut down, bloated and sluggish from what I've read (I haven't actually tried it, so it could have changed by now).
The only thing that stops me is applications like iTunes, where there are no real alternatives. :(

Have to agree with you Sebby, 64 bit support is better, but still to many products don't work, saying that on my new pc 32 bit Vista runs fast, I think it will take a while longer for 64bit to be truly compliant for personal pc's
