Cool animation. but why do i need Avast?

That was a joke, because the animator uses Avast to capture and tame The Chosen One.

I realize that. But why do "i" need it?

You only do if you have no antivirus on Windows. :)

I don't run windows, so have no need for antivirus software :thumb:

Apparently I am as bad at making jokes as I am at understanding them...

I'm glad you enjoyed it though :)

still better to use av on linux, theres are tons of exploits for linux, the main difference being they don't really have issues with worms, due to distro differences etc. still very susceptible to rootkits though ...

any os can get infected, it's just code after all.

As it gets more popular with end users, it will get more popular with the virus writers :(

I think the point is that due to the design of the operating system, they cannot cause as much damage. I do run antivirus software on the webservers (though admittedly that's also to prevent it passing on Windows viruses) but at the moment because there are so few viruses for Linux in the wild it isn't worth running one on my desktop computers. I'm just careful not to let Colin have my root password :P

Agreed.

I'm not so sure that it's due to the design of the OS. As Linux is open source then theoretically it may actually be easier to write code that can infiltrate it.

I think it's more to do with the fact that there are more Windows machines by a large margin and the people who write these things see it as a potential to do damage on a larger scale. Also the fact that they're attacking a large corporation may also appeal to their anarchistic tendencies.

there may be a hell of a lot less viruses for linux/unix/mac based os's but there are still massive amounts of exploits for there os's, exploits lead to escualted priviliges, trojans rootkits etc etc. Will be interesting to see what happens with the likes of ubuntu etc over the next few years as their market share grows, it wasnt long since that mac users where saying ohhh we don't need av, now that outlook has changed a bit, it will with linux in time to.

True about the exploits. That's why you have to be up to date with security updates, and is why I use an OS backed by a commercial company. Of course, the biggest issue we have is exploits in php and php-based software, which have caused mass defacements in the past :(

1. you're right there are a lot less viruses for Linux
2. Massive = ?
3. escualted priviliges ? please explain.
4. You could be correct there as Ubuntu and spinoffs use the sudo system for root privileges.
5. Maybe but i doubt it.

hi ted

By massive i meant, a large amount, sure most linux distro's have a better patching process than microsoft, but many 0 days still exist for os's that have been out for a long time.

A bit of info on privilge esculation for you here. And yes windows is more susceptible, than unix based os's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Privilege_escalation , all it relates to really is exploiting apps/services then gaining root/sudo/su access etc .....

That's like saying it's not worth practicing safe sex because very few of the people you know have HIV.

Ok, perhaps i should qualify that a bit.
I do in fact wear a Linux flavored condom ;D, which has kept me protected from viruses of all kinds for quite a number of years.
I take the basic precautions that any internet user should take.
I'm not complacent, i'm aware but not paranoid.
I have a happy "experience "on the web ;D
I am in no way "bashing windows". If i need to use it i will, and do. TBH, it isn't very much.
"IF" i find that i need to take extra precautions, rest assured that is what i will do.

Personally I don't care what operating systems people use. I myself would use Linux, but I can't be bothered with the hassle of setting it up on a partition. I would do a full install, but I've got software that came with the laptop that I like to use, and my main PC is for gaming & photoshop, so I really can't be bothered to change that.

The one thing that does irritate me is the people that blatently don't give a cr*p about security because they're running Linux. It's because of people like that, that a virus spreads so rapidly through the internet now. If all Linux users had that attitude, then it wouldn't be long until they sufferred greatly from their own arrogance.

What you can be bothered about is neither here nor there. Oh, by the way, you can run Photoshop in Linux if you should so desire.
I care a lot about security, that's why i run Linux.
"Linux users make viruses spread rapidly through the internet"! eh, what?
Hasn't happened yet, don't hold your breath.
