Before I start pulling my mail server at home to bits, I wonder if anyone else has experienced a similar effect to this.
Last night I received 'failed delivery' copies of a number of emails sent through my own server. I know that all of these emails reached their destinations as I have spoken to the recipients. The reason the mail server gave for the failure was 'message looping'. My server passes on email to the IDNet server and then onto the Internet.
After the problems that IDNet had with their mail server two days ago I am wondering if they have perhaps re imported some of their email backup. This would explain some of my issues, I think.
Has anyone, or more importantly anyone's recipients reported duplicated mail? Thanks in advance for checking. If the answer is 'no', I'll need to dig deeper.

i the last couple of days ,when going onto outlook express, it says "receiving mail" ,avg scanner goes through the scan , then nothing, no new mail etc, i think its reprocessing earlier emails
I've not noticed anything here.
AFAIK, there was no restoring of messages, the delivery was just heavily delayed.
No problems here either. AFAIK, nothing was done to the mail server except a tweak to reduce the load and allow the backlog to clear more quickly.
Or what Sebby said. :)
Thanks guys. I am rather stumped now as I can't account for what happened. Will have to see if it occurs again.

What email clients/servers are involved, JB? I find that, with certain contacts, I get two copies of their mail whichever address they use.
Hi Rik,
The mail client is Thunderbird. Has happened to both my machine and my wife's computer. The mail server is 'postfix' with 'fetchmail' as the receiving agent. Both are running on a Linux box. I haven't had much time to play to be honest but it does rather look like some email had appeared twice on IDNet's server. Because the messages has already been sent and correctly delivered a few days ago my server treated them as looping messages.
It's not happened again so I'm hopeful it is a 'one off'. The same system has been running with IDNet since I joined about 4 months ago without any problems.
Fingers crossed.
JB.
Toes crossed for you JB. I've seen it with MS Exchange and Outlook.
:thnks:
