OK, so I don't listen. ;D The other day I installed XP service pack and all was well, then I thought why not install AVG 8.01 instead of AVG 7.5 and thats when problems started, it will not do an automatic scan without locking up and telling me that my database is corrupt. It will not let me install it as it comes up with scan stopped and keeps sending messages to MS. Any one else with this problem?
Sorry, Den, I don't use AVG. :(
I would uninstall it, reboot, delete any AVG folders left behind, run CCleaner to clean the registry, then reinstall AVG. :)

Or you could always resort to one of
these (http://www.edrsolutions.com/solution.asp) ; It definitely stops all kinds of problems with Windows :eek4:
I rendered an HD unrecoverable this morning with a very satisfying application of a 2lb club hammer. It was very tinkly afterwards. :)

Sue agrees with you, Alan.
The bears are strangely satisfying! :)
back on topic,
den have you tried other AV solutions? If you're after a freebie one, then there's Avast Antivirus, I've always found it to be pretty good and all you need to register it is a valid email address.

And addictive. :)
AVG 8 will not let me uninstall it ::) So how the hell can I get rid, windows will not uninstall it either. Never had a prob with 7.5.
Try installing it again or doing a repair, then the uninstall might work.
do you get the same result booting into safe mode and then trying to uninstall?

Same thing in safe mode.
There are several references to AVG 8 problems here. http://www.wilderssecurity.com/forumdisplay.php?s=90498422c26ebed27d35b3c0572fcd80&f=32
Nice link. :thumb:
From "my" American forum where some others are having problems...........
QuoteI have it installed on one PC, and I haven't had any problems. However, I believe it's known to be buggy and that the general consensus is to avoid it for now.
QuoteI updated to 8.0 from 7.5 a few days ago. It attached itself to IE7 and Firefox and slowed both of my browsers WAY down. My system also seems to be somewhat slower since I installed it. I'm getting ready to dump it and go to another anti-virus program. I'm hoping that I won't have uninstall problems with it.
QuoteI got rid of it on a clients pc then went into the registry to clean it out of there & my, I couldn't believe all the leftovers in there. I'm sure I deleted 100 or more keys or values or whatever.
Will never install that AV ever.
QuoteI installed it and it also slowed down my PC.
Had a great deal of trouble un-installing it.
Finally got rid of it. Will keep the 7.5.
Never had any problem with that version.
QuoteBased upon what I've seen here and in other forums, I am advising users to stay with 7.5 until most of the bugs and compatibility issues are fixed.
It's a real shame. I know most applications have teething troubles, but it seems that AVG isn't the decent, lightweight antivirus it once was. :(
I must be one of the lucky ones - AVG 8 seems to be fine on my machine so far :fingers:
I'm running the paid for version 8 with no problems :fingers: although I did have problems with version 7.5 at the begining, I had to go into the registry and delete everything pertaining to AVG and re-install it then it worked ok, but AVg 8 does seem to have slowed my pc down just a little.
Installed service pack 3 and reinstalled it, still could not uninstall AVG 8. Whenever I tried to turn off computer Windows was making me close every running program manually.
Swallowed pride and phoned up mate who has always trouble shooted my computers when I get out of my depth and 50mins later after talking me through back doors we got rid of AVG and installed Avast and all seems well again. ;D AVG 7.5 was great but 8 is a nightmare. Cost me an evening and stress factor went up.
Had the same prob on my XP, could NOT get it to work right so uninstalled and went back to 7.5, the only prob now is a nag screen asking me to upgrade, also saying all support for 7.5 will be withdrawn shortly.

Great, glad you got it sorted Den, quit a few peeps on other forums are not happy with AVG 8. Hope you're pleased with Avast though. :thumb:

I think AVG could lose a lot of the free customers (can you call them customers?). Still, at least there's other, good free alternatives out there. :)
Avg misses too many viruses in my opinion, anyway. :)
QuoteI've heard it can break the microwave. Any truth?
I've tried these experiments on old microwaves and never broke one yet, blackened a few, burnt one or two, but they still worked. Don't try it on the one and only pride and joy in the kitchen, I guarantee you will be in trouble  There are plenty of old working ones about, try the local municipal dump. (oops! sorry, recycling centre), but be very carefull there are some very high voltages in them :eek4:
