Title: Speed and ping issues!
Post by: Cookiemonster on May 12, 2008, 13:19:23
Been noticing a decline in my output speed past few days...this is my recent speed test..

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 832 kbps(UP-STREAM)  8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3893 kbps

Also my ping's are all over the place..This is me pinging the BBC using the 2-Wire ping network test..

Pinging [212.58.253.74] 30 times with: 64 bytes of data

ping successful: icmp_seq=0 time=53 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=1 time=59 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=2 time=57 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=3 time=57 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=4 time=51 ms

ping successful: icmp_seq=15 time=50 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=16 time=46 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=17 time=51 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=18 time=58 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=19 time=49 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=20 time=52 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=21 time=47 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=22 time=52 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=23 time=49 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=24 time=57 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=25 time=48 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=26 time=51 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=27 time=59 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=28 time=59 ms
ping successful: icmp_seq=29 time=57 ms

As you can see very erratic when i usually have a stable 26-30ms. Any ideas? I have replaced filters and i tried the test socket etc etc.

I don't think there's anything obvious, so I'd let IDNet know. It's probably a weird BT issue. :(

Possibly just general degradation of the line, which is becoming more frequent these days, or a congested exchange. :(

I tell you what, ADSL is a strange beast, that's everything back to normal now. Ping's and output speed are as they should be! ??? ???

Another case of ADSL gremlins i think..

Trouble is, Steve, there are so many points along the route that can choke at any instant. You really have to take a long-term view of it. For example, as long as I've been online, I been concious of what I call the Six o'clock Sunday Syndrome - you can almost 'see' traffic levels rise about then, and sites slow down.

Yeah that's what i thought but it was continuously slow for the past few days so i ruled out that. But as you say it could be a number of things. In future i guess i should only really worry if it becomes 56k speeds

No, it's always worth keeping an eye on things, Steve, but look for trends rather than instances. For example, if pings go high, I run Ping Graph for a day to see if there's a pattern.

It could have been work at your exchange, but difficult to say. I'm glad it's sorted anyway. :)

Well i thought that so i took a walk up and i couldn't see any Openreach or BT vans so i guess it's another mystery.

Maybe BT have gone green and make the engineers walk to the exchanges now. :P

That would be sneaky!!! I always skip a heartbeat just anyway when i see an Openreach van appear in my village. Having them walk  would be more difficult to spot ;)
