Not sure I like the look of that wheely dial thingy, but it looks like a logical step forward from Vista.

I've had a proper look at it now. I'm sure whatever they do will be intuitive; after all, Vista is. But what's important is that they remember to focus on performance, which they completely failed to do with Vista. It looks like too much of the work is going on the UI and not enough "under the hood".

Unfortunately though, Seb, it's the UI that will attract the mainstream PC World brigade.   :bawl:

That's true. There's no denying that Vista looks great. If it had XP's performance, it would be a winner. Anyway, fingers crossed that Windows 7 will be a good mixture of the two. :)

I think it's pretty certain other themes will be available, so I wouldn't initially be put off by the default UI.

The thing is though doc, that with the slow take up on vista, I would have thought that MS will want to get this out on time, or even before  ;)

There are some who are starting to compare ME to Vista, so if that comparison sticks through time, some will wonder what MS has and hasn't learned!  ;)

TBH, I've been comparing Vista to Me from its launch. It had that same "this is not quite what we intended but we have to get something to the market" feel about it. :(

Not exactly sure how much use that it's gonna be - at the moment, looks like a headline grabbing thing that only does bits here and there rather than something to completely replace mouse/keyboard

I have never tried Vista, however I cannot help thinking that it has not been a great success, it is hugely resource hungry, that cannot be denied, equally there are no significant improvements over XP that would make me spend money on buying it, I fear that W7 will be similar.

To me it looks like all desktops are converging to look almost identical - windows 7,linux and mac!

... and since some manufacturers are now selling systems with a Linux OS preinstalled, at a corresponding cost saving, I wonder how much longer MS can rely on being able to sell whatever OS they choose to bring out next. £600 for a system with Vista or a fair bit less for the same system with Linux? Nobody has been able to break MS's dominance yet, but maybe good old price pressure will succeed and we'll all benefit from OSs that are improved and refined for performance's sake rather than to satisfy the financial needs of commercial organisations.

I don't suppose that any software house considers that we, as users, would be quite happy if they just fixed the products they have already brought out.

They most certainly don't, Rik. In fairness, there's not a lot wrong with XP, at least since SP2, but I guess they feel it doesn't have the wow factor. I'm sure they were trying to make Vista more "Mac", and I'd imagine they'll continue to go down this route, i.e. concentrating on the UI.

To be fair though Sebby, i would imagine that the vast majority of machines they sell will be bought by peeps who don't know anything apart from how to surf and e-mail, and for those peeps the look of the thing will be one of the reasons for trading up etc, so I don't think they are necessarily wrong to go down the UI route tbh. Just that the peeps who do know what they are doing take a lot less notice of the bells and whistles, so the look of the thing isn't as important.

I don't think they're wrong to put a lot of work into the UI, but I think they're wrong to let other areas suffer. Even Steve Ballmer described Vista as a work in progress. It doesn't inspire confidence. :P

It'll be interesting to see how they finally advertise Windows 7, they can't say that it's to fix Vista's supposed problems can they? I presume that's why they are talking up this touchscreen ability, which many people won't be able to use anyway unless they buy new hardware.

Why not, it's what Microsoft have been doing for the last 20 years or more.  The next version is always going to be the one that fixes everything and does wonders.  If they had any sense they'd do what Apple did and start from (more or less) square one with a complete re-write.  Forget legacy apps and hardware, they could cover that with a version of XP that ran under virtualisation.  With multi-core chips it would be technically achievable.

Otherwise, to me, it's simply same old, same old.

There are a lot of 'features' missing from Vista that MS simply couldn't fix in time for the much delayed release, hence Sebby's 'I think something like 'Vista as it should have been' could be a selling point.' post

I have some hard core, die hard, windows friends starting to seriously look at moving to a Mac and a handful to Linux as a desktop.  Microsoft's own goal on Vista has certainly kept competition alive in the OS war.

I have to admit, I considered it myself.  My trouble is that I have too much money invested in Windows software... and in the end, Vista has been tolerable since SP1.  I'm sad to say I am already looking forward to SP2 fixing a few more things!  :shake:

I have a friend, a MS software Architect and he uses a mac >:D that says a lot I guess  To be honest I like vista now I have it, and we do need improvements in security over a seven year old os kernel, I'm happy with how it runs, to me also XP is a fading memory and SP2 will help more, people really do forget all the grief and moaning when XP came out even after SP1 the same people said they would never use it, and now the same people are spouting the same FUD over Vista. If your pc is old and runs it badly upgrade. At 4 years old a pc will show its age, its out of date as soon as you buy it, you can put more money in to get more than you need now and that way keep stave off its decline as long as possible, and a lot of  modern software would struggle on an old machine anyway, Google Earth being one example.
